USC Study Reveals Gender Gap in Teachers’ Ethical AI Choices in Education

The study, led by Stephen Aguilar, associate director of the center and assistant professor of education at the USC Rossier School of Education, delves into the varying ethical perspectives surrounding AI, including generative AI, rule-based, and outcome-based views.

With the increasing prevalence of AI technologies in educational settings, educators are now faced with the ethical implications of incorporating AI into their teaching practices. The study aims to better understand how teachers perceive the ethical dimensions of AI. 

It surveyed 248 K-12 educators from public, charter, and private schools, with an average of 11 years of teaching experience. The participants included teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools, with over half identifying as women. The findings suggest that gender-based nuances significantly influence teachers’ ethical evaluations of AI.

Gender-based differences in ethical perspectives

The research revealed distinct gender-based differences in teachers’ ethical perspectives concerning AI. Female teachers tended to favor rule-based, or deontological, approaches, which prioritize adhering to ethical principles regardless of consequences. 

In contrast, male teachers were more concerned with the consequences of AI, adopting an outcome-based, or consequentialist, perspective. This gender-based variation highlights the importance of recognizing how individual perspectives may shape the ethical use of AI in education.

The role of gender and technology confidence

The study also emphasized the significance of teachers’ self-efficacy, or their confidence in using technology, and their levels of anxiety about technology when evaluating AI. Teachers who displayed higher self-confidence in using AI tools or exhibited less anxiety were more willing to embrace AI in their classrooms. 

These factors played a critical role in influencing teachers’ ethical judgments concerning AI use, suggesting that educators who feel more comfortable with technology may be more open to its integration into their teaching practices.

The trolley problem in education

Aguilar’s research drew parallels with the classic philosophical thought experiment known as the “Trolley Problem,” which poses a moral dilemma regarding sacrificing one life to save many. In the context of education, this dilemma translates into whether teachers should adopt a rule-based (deontological) perspective, prioritizing ethical principles, or an outcome-based (consequentialist) perspective, seeking the best results. Teachers must navigate these ethical dilemmas when deciding when, where, and how to incorporate generative AI in their classrooms.

Teachers as active participants in ethical AI integration

The study concluded that teachers are actively engaged in grappling with the moral challenges posed by AI in education. They are increasingly raising questions about the values embedded within AI systems and the fairness of AI-driven educational practices. 

While teachers may have varying viewpoints on AI, there is a consensus regarding the need for adopting an ethical framework for AI integration in education. This underscores the importance of addressing ethical considerations to ensure responsible AI use in classrooms.

Generative AI’s potential in education

The USC Center for Generative AI and Society’s report highlights the promising role of generative AI as an educational tool. Rather than banning generative AI from classrooms, the report suggests that a thoughtful approach is needed to harness its potential for improving education. 

For example, generative AI can aid students in brainstorming topics, analyzing alternative perspectives, and critiquing essays. This approach promotes critical thinking skills and encourages students to engage with AI-generated content in a constructive manner.

Mitigating cheating concerns

To address concerns about potential academic misconduct, the report recommends a process-based approach to evaluating students’ work when utilizing generative AI. Instead of solely grading the final product, educators should record and assess the entire process, ensuring that students are actively involved in creating their work with AI support. 

This approach reduces the risk of cheating and ensures that students are genuinely learning and developing their skills.
