ChatGPT Goes Off The Rails, Spewing Nonsense to Users

  • ChatGPT malfunctioned hours ago, giving nonsensical answers to user queries.
  • Users reported strange output, including repetitive phrases and incoherent responses.
  • OpenAI, ChatGPT’s developer, investigated the issue and appears to have resolved it.

ChatGPT is acting strange and appears to have gone “absolutely nuts.” Many users complained on Reddit and X that the popular chatbot has been rendering lengthy and nonsensical answers, even to basic questions, over recent hours.

AI Chatbot Overheats, Delivers Gibberish

“ChatGPT just broke. Constantly getting garbage in my responses. Starts off ok, but then it gets drunk,” X users commented.

In one case, where a user asked ChatGPT what “Bill Evans Trio it would recommend on vinyl,” the chatbot went “insane,” so to speak, repeatedly saying “Happy listening!” in the response.

In another case on Reddit, where a user asked ChatGPT, “What is a computer?” it returned the following texts:

“It does this as the good work of a web of art for the country, a mouse of science, an easy draw of a sad few, and finally, the global house of art, just in one job in the total rest. The development of such an entire real than land of time is the depth of the computer as a complex character. […].”

There are tons of similar cases spread across X and Reddit. The actual cause of the issue remains unknown, though some people speculate that the issue likely stems from ChatGPT’s “Temperature,” which is a parameter that controls the “creativity” or randomness of the text generated.

It’s also worth noting that the problem affects only GPT-4, which is the most advanced version of the chatbot, and OpenAI has taken cognisant of the problem and is “investigating reports of unexpected responses from ChatGPT.”

ChatGPT is Back to Normal

At the time of writing, ChatGPT seemed to have returned to normalcy. When asked, “what is a computer?” it returned the following response, which is more coherent compared with the earlier response it gave to the same question.

“A computer is an electronic device designed to manipulate data according to a set of instructions called a program. It can perform a wide range of tasks, from simple calculations to complex operations involving data processing, analysis, and storage. Computers are composed of hardware and software components,” ChatGPT replied.

The whole situation comes as a solid reminder that despite the impressive capabilities of large language models like ChatGPT, breakdowns and unexpected behaviour can occur.
