2023 crypto scam  reached $295M phishing trap snares 324K users

TL;DR

  • Crypto phishing spiked in 2023, costing victims $295M.
  • Persistent scammers adapt despite closures.
  • Phishing gangs exploit Google and X ads.

In a harrowing revelation, blockchain security platform Scam Sniffer has released its “2023 Wallet Drainers Report,” exposing the grim reality of crypto phishing scams. According to the report, over 324,000 crypto users fell victim to phishing scams last year, resulting in a staggering loss of approximately $295 million in digital assets. This marks a significant escalation in the prevalence and impact of crypto phishing activities throughout 2023.

Phishing activities continue to surge

Scam Sniffer’s report underscores the persistent growth of phishing activities within the crypto space. Despite law enforcement efforts and the occasional closure of phishing operations, “phishing gangs” continue to thrive, effortlessly relocating their malicious endeavors to new platforms that cater to their illicit needs.

The report reveals a disturbing lack of shortage in services available for scammers in this nefarious ecosystem.

Notorious drainers close shop, but scams persist

Two high-profile crypto drainers, Monkey Drainer and Inferno Drainer, called it quits in 2023, but not before causing substantial damage. Monkey Drainer, responsible for several headline-grabbing phishing exploits, managed to abscond with approximately $16 million in digital assets before ceasing operations.

Inferno Drainer, on the other hand, departed the scene after pilfering an astonishing $81 million in digital assets. However, as per Scam Sniffer’s findings, Angel Drainer promptly stepped in to fill the void left by Inferno Drainer’s departure.

Unconventional methods employed by phishers

The report sheds light on the cunning methods employed by crypto thieves to drive traffic to their phishing sites. One tactic involves infiltrating a project’s official Discord and X (formerly Twitter) accounts, using them as vehicles to disseminate phishing links through posts.

Additionally, phishing websites utilize various techniques to generate organic traffic, such as conducting fraudulent airdrops of crypto assets or nonfungible tokens (NFTs). They also exploit expired Discord links and inundate X with spam comments and mentio

Scam Sniffer’s investigation revealed a disconcerting fact – scammers have managed to outsmart the advertising guidelines of major platforms, including Google and X. Phishing websites have successfully published paid Google Search and Twitter ads, evading the platforms’ safeguards designed to protect users from fraudulent schemes.

In the wake of these alarming revelations, crypto enthusiasts and investors are left grappling with the ever-growing threat of phishing scams. The perpetrators’ ability to adapt and persist in the face of closures and crackdowns highlights the need for constant vigilance and heightened security measures within the cryptocurrency community.

Protecting yourself against crypto phishing scams

As the crypto phishing landscape evolves, it becomes increasingly crucial for individuals to take proactive steps to safeguard their investments and personal information. Here are some essential tips to protect yourself from falling victim to these insidious scams:

Verify the Source: Always double-check the source of any cryptocurrency-related information or offers. Be wary of unsolicited messages or emails.

Use Hardware Wallets: Consider storing your digital assets in hardware wallets, which are less vulnerable to online attacks.

Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date with the latest phishing trends and tactics. Educate yourself on common red flags associated with phishing scams.

Use Strong Passwords: Utilize strong, unique passwords for your cryptocurrency accounts and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.

Beware of Impersonation: Be cautious of accounts or profiles claiming to represent official crypto projects. Verify their legitimacy through official channels.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you come across a phishing site or suspect fraudulent activity, report it immediately to the relevant authorities or platforms.
