BNY, Citadel put tokenized Treasury through triparty repo on major platform

  • BNY and Citadel Securities used a tokenized two-year Treasury in an overnight triparty repo transaction.
  • The Treasury settled within minutes on BNY’s private ledger before being used as collateral for cash financing.
  • Tokenized repo already operates at scale, making interoperability and digital settlement money the next major test.

BNY has completed its first triparty repo trade on a major platform using tokenized Treasury collateral. The transaction with Citadel Securities highlighted the potential of digital securities for expediting the funding process although deriving the same benefit for other markets remains more difficult.

A two-year note that settled in minutes

A two-year Treasury note was purchased by Citadel Securities via BNY on the Tradeweb platform. A tokenized version of this was recorded on BNY’s private ledger, which permitted settlement within minutes instead of T+1. Therefore, Citadel used the token for an overnight triparty repo and obtain cash from BNY.

Citadel’s Dan Doherty called the deal “a practical use case that shows how tokenized U.S. Treasuries can move from settlement into financing more efficiently.” BNY’s Carolyn Weinberg, on the other hand, referred to its application “across both settlement and financing.” What made the transaction noteworthy was the implementation of tokenized repo in a major triparty platform, rather than tokenized repo itself.

Why Broadridge’s $7.5 trillion makes this a milestone, not a first

Tokenized repo was already functioning at a large scale. Broadridge disclosed that they processed $7.5 trillion in September 2026, with an average of $359 billion worth of trades daily. Unlike BNY, Broadridge has its own distributed ledger repo platform.

The global repo market handles volume of over $10 trillion every day that makes settlement delays a costly issue. In traditional transactions, the periods of T+1 and T+2 are common, while margin adjustments usually occur in batches. “Timing is the root issue,” Callan wrote. Tokenization can help solve these delays allowing collateral to travel faster, although the one transaction of BNY is not enough to prove it.

Collateral that moves across time zones

In 2027, BNY hopes to expand its Fed-eligible payment settlement methods and triparty operations to Europe and Asia. Digital cash features are also in the works. Extended operating hours could enable seamless international funding if they are able to move cash and collateral together.

The possibilities of tokenized repos are considerable due to the size of possible markets. According to ICMA, there were around €14.9 trillion in outstanding European repo agreements in the first half of 2026, which indicates size rather than volume of trade. Financial players are already stepping up to provide tokenized financing. For example, Broadridge has expanded its repo network to operate with G7 securities.

However, the need for quick access to securities is only one of the requirements. Tokenized financing also requires access to digital cash as a means of settlement. BNY has made a notable advancement in fulfilling this requirement with the launch of its tokenized deposits in January 2026.

Interoperability, settlement money and the systemic questions

BNY’s private ledger is only one system. In July 2026, DTCC tokenized DTC-held securities on Besu and Canton, with more than 30 firms participating. Tests included a Treasury repo delivery-versus-payment transaction; its tokenization service was scheduled for October.

The BIS warns that digital settlement must preserve trust in money and legal finality. Institutions also face fragmented liquidity and cross-ledger risks. The real question is whether these networks can exchange collateral safely at scale.
