Sony announces the end of its PlayStation Stars reward program

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced the closure of the PlayStation Stars loyalty program. The company said the loyalty program will stop accepting new members effective immediately. Sony also added that the program will officially end in November next year.

According to the firm, the loyalty program will not accept new members from May 21, 2025. The firm said the current members can still earn points up to July 23. Sony added that existing members can still earn Digital Collectibles and level up their current status until July

Sony reveals what PlayStation Stars members should expect

Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that if members of the program intend to cancel their membership after May 21, 2025, they will not be able to rejoin the program. The company added that members will lose all the points earned from gaming upon membership cancellation. 

The game’s developer reiterated that no more campaigns will be available after July 23 this year. Also, members will not be able to earn any additional rewards. SIE also confirmed that members of the loyalty program will not be able to earn any status benefits afterward.

Sony joins Nintendo in dropping their rewards program

While announcing the closure of the loyalty program, Sony confirmed its commitment to experimenting with new and thrilling ways to ensure its gamers create lasting memories. The firm revealed that many gamers have been celebrating since the launch of the PlayStation Stars loyalty program in 2022. 

Sony said members of the program have earned rewards through playing games. The firm also stated that the program has helped foster a deeper connection with gamers around the world.

“We want to thank all of our players for supporting PlayStation Stars since the launch in 2022. As we explore new ways to evolve our loyalty program efforts for the future, we’ll continue to celebrate all of our players through the various community activities we have planned.”

Sony argued that the program has taught the firm the best types of activities gamers respond well to. The firm added that it has been committed to ensuring it evolves with industry and gamer trends. Sony said it has decided to wind down the program so it could refocus its efforts on bettering their services. 

The firm also thanked its members, saying their participation and feedback have been valuable. Sony promised its gamers that it was already thinking of how it could better evolve its reward programs. The company said it will be announcing new ways to reward gamers.

Sony’s news came two months after Nintendo discontinued its Gold Points. Nintendo revealed on March 24, 2025, that there would be no gold points when gamers purchase digital content from their eShop. The company clarified that users could still earn Gold Points if they had pre-ordered any digital product before the discontinuation date. 

Nintendo said gamers could also earn points if they bought a physical version of any game launched before March 24 this year. The firm added that all games launched after March 24, 2025, will not be eligible for the reward. Nintendo said Gold Points could still be received on game purchases completed at its New York store through March 24 this year. 

While announcing the discontinuation of Gold Points, the firm thanked its gamers for participating in its rewards program. The company asked gamers to continue taking advantage of the other features of the rewards program. Nintendo revealed that gamers could still earn Platinum Points even after March 24 since the discontinuation only affected Gold Points rewards.
