Dfinity sues Meta over trademark infringement

TL;DR

  • Dfinity slams Meta with lawsuit over infringement
  • Meta just registered the trademark this year
  • Lawyers claim Dfinity is losing income

Dfinity has announced that it will be suing Meta, the parent company of Facebook and other platforms, over the usage of its infinity symbol. According to the lawyers representing the Internet Computer blockchain company, the Meta brand infringed on its trademark signature when it adopted the infinity logo. The lawsuit was filed at a court in California some days ago with the company’s legal team stating that it adopted the mathematical symbol that it uses to distinguish its services and products.

Meta registered its trademark this year

According to the lawsuit, Dfinity mentioned that the company adopted the trademark in areas where they had already registered it as their own. The company pointed out that the patent office approved Meta’s patent application this year, while their dates are as far back as 2018.

The legal team also mentioned that Dfinity had adopted the symbol in 2017. Although most people credit mathematicians for the infinity symbol, the usage has been known to go as far back as possible. However, the lawsuit is not only based that Meta adopted its logo, it is framing it on the premise that the firm is using the logo in a field where both of them offer the same products. Notably, besides its usual computer-related services, Dfinity has made headway in the blockchain space.

Lawyers claim Dfinity is losing income

The lawsuit claims that both companies offer similar products as they always provide the best internet experience for their users. It also claims that users could get conflicted, seeing that both entities use the same channel for marketing its product in the market. It argues that despite prior knowledge about the Dfinity logo, Meta still went ahead to adopt the same symbol on all its products. In its statement, Dfinity mentioned that Meta was aware of the logo before it went ahead to infringe on its trademark.

The lawyers of Dfinity also claimed that the confusion caused by the symbol had caused the company a lot of money. They also mentioned that the company stands at risk due to the continued usage of its logo by Meta. Legal lawsuits over trademarks have been rampant in the crypto sector for a while now. FTX was slammed with a lawsuit following a trademark infringement over its Jack character on its exchange.
