To put this into perspective, this level of consumption is roughly equivalent to the annual energy usage of a nation like the Netherlands and constitutes 0.5% of the world’s current global electricity consumption.

While de Vries urges caution against exaggeration, he underscores the significance of these numbers. AI’s expanding footprint in various industries, from healthcare to finance, is driving this surge in energy demand. As the appetite for AI services continues to grow, it is highly probable that associated energy consumption will follow suit.

The environmental impact of AI’s energy hunger

In 2022, data centers accounted for 1% to 1.3% of the world’s total electricity consumption, with cryptocurrency mining adding an additional 0.4%. With AI poised to join this league of energy-intensive technologies, concerns about its environmental impact become paramount. De Vries provides an estimate that running ChatGPT could potentially consume 564 MWh of electricity daily. Furthermore, extrapolating these figures to larger-scale AI applications, like Google’s search engine, paints an alarming picture. If Google were to deploy AI extensively for its approximately nine billion daily searches, it would require a staggering 29.2 TWh of power annually. This is comparable to the entire electricity consumption of Ireland and nearly double Google’s total energy consumption in 2020, which stood at 15.4 TWh.

Industry response and energy efficiency

AI companies are not oblivious to the energy-intensive nature of their operations. OpenAI, for example, acknowledges the need for greater energy efficiency and is actively working to improve the energy footprint of its AI models. Companies are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact and are making strides to minimize it.

Thomas Wolf, the co-founder of Hugging Face, points to a promising trend where smaller AI models are approaching the capabilities of larger ones. Models like Mistral 7B and Meta’s Llama 2, which are 10 to 100 times smaller than GPT-4, can perform many of the same tasks. The message here is clear: not everyone needs the computational behemoth that is GPT-4, much like you don’t need a Ferrari for your daily commute.
