LIVE: Markets open high in tech’s first earnings week as Trump-Iran tensions remain high
  • U.S. stock futures are up despite fears of a Black Monday, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq try to recover from last week’s losses.

  • Asian markets are mostly down, oil prices have eased, and the euro is slipping as unrest spreads across France.

  • Meta (META) and Tesla (TSLA) report earnings this week, with investors hoping their results can help steady the market.

  • Trump-Iran tensions remain high as U.S. embassies warn of possible attacks, while shipping threats in the Persian Gulf and strikes on Russian energy facilities keep traders on edge.

Live Reporting

07:14 U.S. futures rise despite Black Monday fears as Asian stocks fall and Iran tensions grow

So much for the Black Monday warnings, at least for now. U.S. stock futures opened higher on Monday despite growing calls on social media for a major market crash.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures both gained 0.2%, while Dow Jones futures climbed 0.1%. Energy prices moved the other way, with WTI crude falling 0.6%, Brent crude dropping 0.5%, and natural gas losing 2.1%.

The relatively calm oil market on Sunday helped support stocks, although traders still have plenty to worry about.

Last week was particularly rough for technology stocks. The Nasdaq plunged 4.5%, ending four straight weeks of gains. The S&P 500 also shed nearly 2%, its worst weekly performance since late June.

And things aren’t looking much better across Asia.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 1.65%, while the Topix fell 1.12%. South Korea’s Kospi lost 1.29%, and the smaller Kosdaq declined 0.93%. Mainland China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.28%, although Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 managed to gain 0.37%.

The corporate earnings for the week might have another thing to talk about. Among those companies set to report their earnings are Meta Platforms (META) and Tesla (TSLA). The anticipation is high that good figures will help stabilize the market.

Meanwhile, the situation in the Persian Gulf remains tense as attacks on ships increase. Russia and Ukraine are also continuing to target each other’s energy infrastructure, with Ukraine striking an oil terminal in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

Longer-dated oil futures have already started rising as traders consider the possibility of disruptions continuing well into 2027.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the euro fell by 0.1% versus the U.S. dollar and British pound due to the protests by students in France against rising cost of living and other issues.

The currency has lost about 4.4% against the dollar so far this year and 0.9% for the current month. Traders are also considering the prospects of more increases in interest rates by the Federal Reserve in light of persistent inflation in the United States.

In the Middle East, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attended the 52nd Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers’ meeting in Baghdad. Iraq’s capital is hosting the gathering for the first time since 1981.

“Under Iraq’s leadership and experienced SG, we expect active OIC role in addressing Islamic world’s challenges and resolving differences.”

That message came as several U.S. embassies across the Middle East issued identical security warnings to American citizens about possible attacks linked to Iran or the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

“Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including U.S. businesses and other institutions.”

What to Know

Wall Street is starting the week higher, but tech earnings, Middle East tensions, energy risks, and global market losses could quickly change the mood.
