Ledger launches $849 fix for tampered wallets costs, set to ship 2027 at the earliest

- Ledger unveiled Atom, an $849 security device with new anti-tampering hardware.
- The new device is in response to implants that drained an estimated $86 million or more from wallets sold through reseller CryptoBilis.
- The device will not ship until summer 2027 at the earliest, from a company that delivered its last flagship over a year late.
Ledger has responded to an incident where hardware implants drained approximately $86 million from its customers by unveiling a new device that’ll cost $849. The device will not be released until at least summer 2027.
The device will be called Atom, unveiled by the French manufacturer at its Op3n event in Paris on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The company stated Atom will have strict anti-tampering measures in place, if not its strictest. The announcement comes on the heels of Ledger’s delayed flagship launch, arriving more than 12 months behind schedule. This makes next year’s release date seem unlikely.
A two-year delay from a manufacturer with a late-delivery record
Ledger does not have a stellar record when it comes to keeping to its timelines. The company announced the Stax at its Op3n event in 2022, saying it would be launched in March 2023, but Stax only got to pre-order customers in 2024, due to manufacturing challenges.
At the moment, Atom is classified as “pending certification,” and the company does not control when certification occurs.
Also, Atom will cost more than double the price of Ledger’s current hardware products. Buyers will have to adjust from a current price range of $69 to $399 to Atom’s price of $899 after launch.
Nothing for the Nano you buy this week
Atom’s protections will not be available to the millions of Nano, Flex and Stax units that are currently in circulation or on sale.
For current and prospective buyers, Ledger’s response is procedural, not technical. Ledger has asked its authorized resellers to leave devices in the back room and hand them out only when a purchase is made.
The company reiterated its existing policy that prohibits the reselling of returned units in any form whatsoever, even if they’re sealed.
Resellers also have a duty to report any customer complaint about an unusual product. Solana Mobile, in a separate announcement, stated that Atom will be sold via Ledger’s website only, making reseller channels redundant.
How the implant pulled keys off the screen
Ledger announced an investigation earlier this month into an incident in which wallets were sold via CryptoBilis, a Southeast Asian reseller. The wallets showed up with a hidden chip inside.
The implant was placed inside the enclosure of Ledger Nano X units and recited the 24-word recovery phrase off the screen when it was being set up. It then transmitted the recovery phrase over LTE with the help of a built-in SIM.
Whoever has that phrase can easily import the wallet in a different location and transfer the funds.
Ledger’s Donjon security team stated the chip did not affect the Secure Element, the operating system or the signing process. As a result, it was not flagged by the company’s “Genuine Check.”
What Atom actually adds, and what Ledger will not say
A company spokesperson has said that Atom’s “Core Protection feature will explicitly block the screen reader implants from this weekend’s incident.”
The device keeps its Secure Element, MCU and FPGA chip in a monitored zone that keeps an eye out for drilling or forced opening, links the back cover to the unit, and ensures tamper sensors operate on a different battery while powered off.
The other part of Atom reads as a category change instead of a security patch. The device uses Android alongside Ledger OS on an EAL6+ secure element, dovetailing between a Standard Mode for your everyday apps and a Secure Mode where transactions are reviewed and signed. A physical switch prevents power from getting to the camera and microphone.
Ledger plans to include AI agent approvals via its Agent Intent system and OpenClaw, encrypted messaging via GPG/OpenPGP, post-quantum cryptography, and Solana Mobile’s Seeker app.
Ledger did not give a clear timeline when asked when anti-tampering work began.

FAQs
What is Ledger Atom and how much does it cost?
Atom is a new security and privacy device that runs Android apps alongside a separate Secure Mode for signing transactions. The Block reported a $849 Founder's Edition requiring a $100 refundable deposit, with standard orders at $899 after launch, against a current Ledger range of $69 to $399.
When will Ledger Atom ship?
Ledger expects deliveries to begin in summer 2027, pending certification. The company's previous flagship, the Stax, shipped about fourteen months after its promised March 2023 date.
How did the CryptoBilis implant steal crypto?
A hidden chip inside Ledger Nano X units sold by CryptoBilis read the 24-word recovery phrase from the screen during setup and transmitted it over LTE via an embedded SIM, leaving the Secure Element and software untouched. On-chain researchers have linked the incident to more than 300 drained wallets and losses estimated between $86 million and $103 million.
