PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – May 22 marks 15 years since a Florida programmer paid 10,000 bitcoin for two pizzas — the first known transaction using cryptocurrency for real-world goods. To commemorate the milestone, PizzaDAO is hosting its fifth annual Global Pizza Party, giving away free pizza in more than 400 cities worldwide. Since 2021, the community has distributed more than $1 million worth of pizza across 75+ countries.

The event spans six continents and brings together crypto communities, local pizzerias, and pizza lovers for a shared moment of generosity, global connection, and plenty of slices.

“This is about more than just celebrating Bitcoin history,” said Sam “Snax” Weinrott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,

founder of PizzaDAO. “It’s about building global community and feeding people with no strings attached. Pizza should be free — and for one day, it is.”

A Decentralized Celebration with Global Impact

PizzaDAO is a decentralized collective that started during the NFT boom in 2021. Using proceeds from the Rare Pizzas NFT collection — created by more than 300 independent artists — the community has funded pizza parties across more than 75 countries, distributing more than $1 million of pizza over the past four years.

This year’s Global Pizza Party includes events in major cities like New York, London, São Paulo, Nairobi, Mumbai, Berlin, Sydney and dozens more, as well as first-time parties in new locations across Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Each event is organized by local volunteers who partner with independent pizzerias, supporting small businesses and bringing communities together for a day of celebration.

Celebrating the Bitcoin Origin Story

Bitcoin Pizza Day commemorates May 22, 2010 — the date Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas, marking the first time Bitcoin was used to purchase a physical item. At the time, the BTC was worth around $41. Today, those same coins would be valued at over $600 million.

The purchase has become legendary in the crypto world, representing the early optimism, experimentation and real-world potential of decentralized digital currencies.

How to Join the Global Pizza Party

Events are free and open to the public. Anyone can join an in-person event, host a party in their local community, or take part in the online celebration at global pizza.party, where attendees can find an interactive world map, livestream link  and details for every city.
