Popular streamer xQc fuels ongoing AI art vs creative community argument

In this post:

  • Popular streamer xQc claimed AI-generated art is often better than most artists’ best work
  • Other streamers like Asmongold worry that AI art could harm the future of traditional artists, pushing them to consider different careers.
  • While critics argue AI art lacks human expression, some fans appreciate the convenience and impressive quality of AI-generated creations

Popular streamer xQc has fueled the ongoing argument over the use of AI to create artwork. Recently, he claimed that artistic creations from ChatGPT are “better than most artists’ best work.”

The current AI art trend involves using ChatGPT to create images in the style of iconic Studio Ghibli films. Some examples include Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. OpenAI previously stated that the virality of this new feature is “melting” ChatGPT’s GPUs.

Popular streamers, Asmongold, and Nmplol think that it is putting the future of art in danger. Furthermore, they also suggested that artists may end up considering alternate paths if people continue to use AI to generate art.

xQC tried ChatGPT’s image-gen features live on his stream

xQc’s statements came after he tried out ChatGPT’s image-generation tools on his live stream. When one viewer criticized these AI-made creations as “AI slop,” xQc was quick to respond. “Why do you call everything ‘slop’ these days?” he asked, noting that the term seems to be used to dismiss anything new. He also stated, “A lot of AI art coming out is literally better than most artists’ best work.”

Backing up his stance, he said, “I don’t consume the method, I consume the product. If this gives me a better product, I have to give credit where credit is due.” His blunt opinion ignited strong reactions on Reddit and X. Some argued that art is about expression and that machines cannot replace the human element. One user called the trend “slop because it takes zero effort to create,” while another wrote, “It’s impressive someone can miss the point of art and expression so confidently.”

Not everyone disagrees with the streamer’s opinion

Some fans see AI as just another tool that can be used for creative purposes. They praise its convenience and speed. One user wrote, “He’s right. Most people don’t care how it’s made if it looks cool.” Another added, “I have zero issue with AI when it’s convenient, and I’m happy with the end result.”

xQc’s remarks come after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s humorous post on X, who joked about people using his technology to turn him into a “twink ghibli style.”
