Will there be Minecraft 2? Game creator hints at ‘spiritual successor’

  • A “Minecraft 2” project could mean he is making a comeback to the gaming industry.

The creator of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, recently hinted at a “spiritual successor” to his iconic survival game. “Minecraft 2” project could mean he is making a comeback to the gaming industry.

To date, Minecraft has been one of the most successful video games of all time, selling 300 million copies since 2011. The latest movie, which featured Jason Momoa, is already slated for 2025.

However, Notch, who sold his studio Mojang to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, hasn’t been active with the franchise.

In a recent post on X, Notch asked fans whether they’d prefer a “Minecraft 2” or a different type of game he’s working on. He shared his current project blends a “traditional roguelike” with elements of a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler, similar to Legend of Grimrock or Eye of the Beholder.

However, he admitted he’d also consider creating a game in the same genre as Minecraft if that’s what fans want, jokingly adding that he’d “take the cash” if it were to happen.

Could there even be a Minecraft sequel?

When fans asked if it would be legal for him to create a Minecraft sequel, Notch was candid: “No, it would be super illegal.” Therefore, he proposed making a game similar in spirit but original in design, which he referred to as a “spiritual successor.”

He frankly said he’d be a “b*tch to work with.” Still, he’d be open to doing an official sequel with Microsoft’s help.

Even though all of these rumors exist, neither Microsoft nor Mojang have ever suggested plans for a full sequel.

They have continued providing updates to the original game. Its player base continues to grow with updates bringing new content and support to new platforms.

It will be Notch’s first significant game since leaving the team that made Minecraft. Therefore, his new game will take a long time to develop considering the time since he last committed to a project of this scale.

For now, fans will have to wait and see if Notch will tease any announcements.
