Microsoft Gaming announces the new head of Minecraft developer studio
  • Kayleen Walters is the new head of Minecraft Developer Studio.
  • She is also the vice president of Microsoft Gaming.
  • Walters will host open forums for staff to discuss the studio’s future plans.

Microsoft Gaming has appointed Kayleen Walters as the new head of Mojang Studios, the creator behind Minecraft. The former head, Asa Bredin, exited the company for personal reasons.

Kayleen Walters will work under the leadership of Helen Chiang, who heads game content and studios at Microsoft.

A report by Variety shared Chiang’s note to her staff. She expressed how changes are always difficult and showed belief in the strength of the team to progress forward. She said, “With strong leadership in place and a clear vision for the future, we are well-positioned to tackle the challenges we face in the marketplace with speed and momentum.”

Chiang also said that Asa Bredin stepped down from her position “to focus on personal goals outside of work.” Bredin became the head of Mojang Studios two years after joining it in 2021.

Walters will become Mojang’s new head immediately. However, Bredin will stay until the end of February to ensure a smooth transition.

As a vice president of Microsoft Gaming, Walters manages franchise development in her current position. She will lead Mojang Studios and maintain her role at Microsoft Gaming. Walters will spend most of her time between her office in Washington State and Mojang studios in Stockholm.

Microsoft Gaming leadership announced further team changes

The new leader, Walters, and her team will also host open forums for staff to ask questions and explore studio plans. The company wants its workers to attend and participate actively as Mojang moves into its future development.

Federico San Martin will now manage franchise development operations and report to Walters.

Moreover, Amy Stillion will be the chief of staff for both Mojang and Microsoft game content and studio teams. She will also lead the Mojang Redmond People Experience team and become a member of the studio leadership team.

The leadership change at Mojang comes as Warner Bros.’s “Minecraft” movie approaches release in April.
