23:12 Stock futures drop as Iran talks stall and Hormuz tensions lift oil

U.S. stock futures fell Sunday night as traders watched the stalled Iran peace talks and another escalation near the Strait of Hormuz.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures lost 0.2%, dropping 130 points. S&P 500 futures were down 0.3%, and Nasdaq 100 futures also slipped 0.3%.

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would not send U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan for ceasefire talks on Iran. Trump said the talks could happen by phone instead.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said travel would waste too much time and said there was already too much work to do. Trump also said no one knew who was in charge on the other side, and said the U.S. held all the leverage.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said there is no planned meeting right now between Tehran and Washington.

Markets also reacted to fresh pressure near the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boarded two container ships close to the key oil shipping route. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose about 2%, trading above $96 a barrel.

17:41 World leaders condemn shooting as King Charles prepares for U.S. visit

World leaders responded Sunday after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with several governments sending support to President Donald Trump and condemning political violence.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on X that he was shocked by what happened at the dinner. Keir said attacks aimed at democratic institutions or press freedom must be denounced clearly and strongly.

His response came after repeated criticism from Trump over the U.K.’s position on the U.S. and Israeli-led war against Iran.

King Charles III is being updated on developments in the U.S., media reports said, citing Buckingham Palace. Charles is scheduled to visit Trump in the U.S. on Monday.

The BBC quoted the palace as saying talks would continue through the day with U.S. officials and planning teams. Those talks are expected to decide whether Saturday night’s incident changes the operational plan for the visit.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun also condemned the shooting. His statement came as Lebanon remains under attack, with Israeli occupation forces bombing civilian areas in Southern Lebanon and killing journalists.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is involved in talks between the U.S. and Iran, said he was shocked by the attack. Shehbaz said he was relieved Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and other attendees were safe. He also wished Trump continued safety and well-being.

European leaders gave similar responses. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X that violence should never have a place in politics.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said a dinner meant to honor free press should not turn into a frightening scene. Kaja also wished the injured officer a fast recovery.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also sent support after the shooting. Giorgia, whose ties with Trump have worsened over the Iran war and Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo, said she stood with Trump, Melania, Vice President JD Vance, and everyone who attended the dinner.

15:32 Trump pushes White House ballroom plan after shooting at Washington dinner

Trump used Sunday’s shooting fallout to argue again for the planned White House ballroom, saying the project should keep moving.

Trump and several Cabinet members had been removed from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night after guests heard gunfire. After the event, Trump said U.S. Secret Service agents had taken down the shooter.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the attack showed why the military, Secret Service, law enforcement, and presidents over the past 150 years had pushed for a large and secure ballroom on White House grounds.

Trump said the incident would not have happened inside what he called the “Militarily Top Secret Ballroom” now being built at the White House. He added that the project should be finished as fast as possible.

Trump had attended the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner as an honoree. The dinner is a private event, and a ballroom built on White House property would likely not be used for privately held functions.

The project is already in court. The National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States is suing the Trump administration over the planned $400 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

The group is trying to stop construction at the site of the former East Wing, which was torn down to clear space for the project.

For now, the courts have let work continue. On April 16, a federal judge issued a revised order that mostly stopped the administration from carrying on with above-ground construction.

The order still allowed underground work, including construction tied to national security facilities. It also allowed above-ground work only when needed to cover, secure, or protect those facilities.

One day later, a three-judge panel at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit paused that order for now. The court also set a June 5 hearing to review the case.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation says Trump moved ahead without congressional approval, which the group argues goes beyond his authority.

03:42 Trump says officer survived because of vest as prosecutors prepare charges

Trump said during a White House briefing room press conference that one officer was hit by gunfire, but survived because he was wearing a strong bulletproof vest. Trump said he had already spoken with the officer and said the officer was doing well.

Officials later identified the suspected gunman as Cole Allen from Torrance, California. MS NOW reported the identification based on a former senior law enforcement official who had been briefed on the case. The Associated Press said Cole is 31 years old, citing two law enforcement officials.

Before speaking to reporters, Trump used Truth Social to post images that appeared to show Cole after he had been restrained. Trump also shared what appeared to be security video from the incident.

Trump said the dinner had been meant to bring press members and people from both major parties together around free speech. He said the attack ended up uniting the room in a different way, because people inside the ballroom reacted together during the danger.

When reporters asked Trump if he thought Cole had been trying to kill him, Trump answered, “I guess.” He said investigators were questioning Cole and that more information about the motive should come out in the next few days.

The incident adds to two earlier attempts on Trump’s life. Trump survived a shooting during a July 2024 rally in Pennsylvania. Months later, another man tried to kill Trump while he was playing golf at his course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said prosecutors had started with two preliminary charges. One was tied to firearm use, and the other involved assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon. Jeanine said more charges were expected as investigators reviewed new details in what she called a fast-moving case.

Jeanine said Cole is expected to appear Monday in federal district court for his arraignment.

02:26 Trump confirms that suspect is in custody as dinner organizers restart the event

Trump posted a statement on Truth Social after the shooting, saying Secret Service and law enforcement “acted quickly and bravely.”

He said the shooter had been apprehended and added that he had recommended letting the event continue, though he said officials would make the final call.

Trump said the night would not go as planned either way. He wrote that the evening would be “much different” and said they would “have to do it again.”

Several senior officials from the Trump administration were also at the dinner, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. After being introduced, Kash and Robert were among the high-level guests present when the room went into lockdown.

White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang later returned to the stage and said the dinner would resume. Weijia affirmed to the crowd that people wanted answers, but said there were no full details yet.

Many of the 2,600 attendees hid under tables as the shooting unfolded. Waiters also ran toward the front of the dining hall.

Shortly before security moved first lady Melania Trump off the stage, Melania appeared to notice something in the crowd and looked worried, based on a C-SPAN live feed.

02:05 Gunshots force Trump and Melania out of the dinner ballroom

Donald Trump was pulled out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunfire was heard inside the Washington Hilton ballroom.

This was only hours after Trump had returned from his crypto press conference at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.

At least five shots were heard while guests were eating their first course. The sound appeared to come from the back of the room, several minutes after White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang finished speaking. Weijia had delivered remarks before the room suddenly turned into a security scene.

Trump was sitting on the front stage in between first lady Melania Trump and his Vice President JD Vance when guards moved in around him. Many people in the ballroom dropped under their tables as the noise spread through the room.

Video from the dinner showed Trump being led away from the stage seconds later. Armed guards in tactical gear then moved onto the dais with large rifles as the evacuation continued.
