JPMorgan quietly lands nearly 2 million‑share position in BitMine
  • JPMorgan brought its dollar deposit token JPM Coin (JPMD) live on Ethereum on October 19, 2026, expanding from Base, where it launched in November 2025.
  • The token is restricted to approved institutional clients and represents bank deposits, not a retail stablecoin, and it is aimed at settlement, collateral, and treasury use rather than ether price gains.
  • The real test is whether institutions adopt bank money for on-chain payments as it competes with stablecoins that already hold roughly $147.62 billion on Ethereum.

JPMorgan brought its dollar deposit token, JPM Coin, to Ethereum on October 19, 2026. The token has already been launched on Base before. With this new launch, institutional clients will now have another option for settling transactions using bank-issued money. It also offers J.P. Morgan a chance to see whether deposit tokens can compete with stablecoins for institutional payments.

A deposit token, not a retail stablecoin

JPM Coin, traded under the name JPMD, refers to funds held as dollar deposits at JPMorgan. Unlike traditional stablecoins, it is covered by traditional bank deposit framework and has inherent risks associated with any bank deposit. It can only be held and transferred by approved institutional clients.

JPMD officially started on Base on November 12, 2025, following the testing periods with B2C2, Coinbase and Mastercard. JPMorgan further expanded to Ethereum as it was attracted by its deep liquidity of the platform and its booming market for tokenized products.

Where Ethereum’s dollar markets already stand

Ethereum has been hosting a considerable amount of tokenized US dollar activity. According to RWA.xyz figures for October 19, 2026, the overall market capitalization of stablecoins was $147.62 billion spread out among 26.91 million holders. Of this, Tether made up $78.8 billion, while Circle $45.9 billion. The segment of distributed real-world assets on Ethereum added up to $16.91 billion along with 293,374 holders.

These are market figures and not balances of JPMD.

JPMorgan disclosed over $4 trillion worth of total Kinexys transactions, with average daily volumes standing at about $7 billion. However, this applies to all of its blockchain services rather than to JPMD alone.

It should be noted that the bank has not provided figures specific to JPMD in relation to its Base or Ethereum issuances, outstanding balances, or transaction volumes in its announcement published on October 19. Therefore, its Kinexys data cannot be used in making any conclusions about JPMD adoption.

An adoption test, not a price catalyst

JPMD gives institutions a way to move money around the clock. Payments can be settled and collateral posted without having to wait for banking hours. Fast transfers may also eliminate the need for maintaining money beforehand.

The expansion to Ethereum is part of the wider push of JPMorgan into tokenization. Its MONY fund was launched in December 2025, with a seed capital of $100 million. Another fund was launched in May 2026. Both funds are separate from JPMD. There is no information that either of the funds uses the JPMD for settlement purposes.

The co-founder of Ethereum Institutional, Matthew Dawson, called the expansion of JPMD to Ethereum:

“a clear signal that institutional finance is moving onto public, verifiable infrastructure.”

However, launching additional products does not ensure their adoption. It is important for JPMD to have sufficient number of approved institutions using it on a regular basis. We shall know more about this when J.P. Morgan provides the transaction data concerning the token.

Regulators weigh fragmentation and settlement

In a speech on August 28, 2026, Pablo Hernández de Cos, BIS General Manager, compared tokenized deposits with stablecoins, stating the importance of monetary safeguards and interoperability.

The IMF warned on October 8, 2026 that fragmented networks and lack of access to safe settlement assets may hinder the full realization of the potential of tokenization. For now, JPMD provides institutions with a way to utilize money from banks on public blockchains without losing banking oversight. The real question now is whether considerable volume in transactions will follow.
