Google has announced that it will replace Google Assistant with Gemini before the end of 2025. According to its blog post, the company mentioned that over the next few months, it will move users to the AI virtual assistant, abandoning the Google Assistant feature that users have been enjoying for a while.
In the blog post, the company also mentioned that later this year, Google Assistant will cease to be available on most mobile devices and in application stores. The company mentioned that it believes that an assistant should be something personal to its users and should be able to interact with the users and the apps and services they use.
According to Google, the Assistant was launched in 2016 as a natural language processing and voice recognition technology that allowed its users to get help from Google. However, this shift is necessary due to the way generative AI is transforming the world and the way we interact with technology. In its quest to provide users with a helpful assistant with AI at its core, it has provided users with the AI-powered assistant.
Google to shift users from Google Assistant to Gemini
In the blog post, Google noted that millions of people were already making the switch, noting that they have been getting reviews on how helpful the new features of the AI have been. “Millions of people have already made the switch from Google Assistant to Gemini, and they are telling us how helpful the new, AI-powered features are in their daily lives. So we want to update you on how we’ll bring this enhanced experience to as many people as possible,” the blog reads.

In the coming months, the company said it will upgrade more users on mobile devices, removing the Google Assistant and replacing it with the AI. Google added that the classic Google Assistant will be taken off mobile devices and will no longer be available for download on stores.
In addition to these changes, Google noted that tablets, cars, and devices that can connect to mobiles will also be shifted to the AI. “Additionally, we’ll be upgrading tablets, cars, and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches, to Gemini. We’re also bringing a new experience, powered by Gemini, to home devices like speakers, displays, and TVs,” the company said.
Google will prioritize the improvement of Gemini
In the blog post, Google mentioned that since the launch of Gemini in 2024, access to the app has been expanded greatly. The application is now available in about 200 countries and in more than 40 languages. However, the company notes that it will continue to improve the app, providing users with quality day-to-day Gemini experience.
Google also mentioned that for those who rely on Google Assistant to carry out everyday tasks, Gemini has been updated to carry out some of the most requested tasks, including playing music, setting times, or taking action from the lock screen. It also noted that the AI’s capabilities supersede that of the Google Assistant, noting that users can enjoy diverse help from Gemini. “Features like Gemini Live for free-flowing, multimodal conversations and Deep Research, which transforms Gemini into a personal research assistant, are only possible with AI — and we’re just getting started,” Google said.
The move to drop Google Assistant in favor of the AI is expected, considering Google recently dropped its Pixel 9 smartphone with Gemini as its built-in virtual assistant. Meanwhile, Google announced in a previous post that it is rolling out new features for Gemini, making big upgrades to its performance.
