Google has announced plans to invest €25 million in Europe to bolster AI skills and training, particularly targeting underserved and vulnerable communities. The initiative, spearheaded by the company’s charitable arm Google.org, aims to widen access to emerging technologies across the continent.

Empowering communities with AI skills

A significant portion of the funding, totaling €10 million, is earmarked for enhancing workers’ proficiency in AI. This investment is part of Google’s broader AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe, which seeks to empower individuals and organizations to harness the potential of artificial intelligence.

The allocation process will be conducted in collaboration with the Centre for Public Impact, a not-for-profit organization. Communities can apply through eligible organizations to receive training in foundational AI concepts, with a focus on delivering sessions in local languages to ensure accessibility.

Driving innovation and economic growth

In addition to skills development, Google’s initiative encompasses increased support for AI startups and the expansion of free online AI training sessions into a wider array of languages. Matt Brittin, President of Google EMEA, emphasized the importance of democratizing AI, stating that it “must be built by, and accessible to, everyone” to realize its full potential.

Brittin highlighted Europe’s opportunity to lead in leveraging AI for economic growth and equitable development. He outlined the potential benefits, including more productive industries, meaningful employment opportunities, and the emergence of new job sectors.
