Ether ETFs lose $1.08B in October, 2026's biggest monthly outflow
  • US Ether ETFs saw $1.08 billion in October outflows, erasing September’s $832 million gains.

  • Year-to-date net inflows fell to around $485 million, despite a small $26 million inflow on Tuesday.

  • Bitcoin ETFs fared better, recording $67 million in October outflows but retaining $809 million in yearly net inflows.

US-listed Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen an outflow of $1.08 billion this October, marking the biggest-ever monthly outflow in 2026 so far and wiping out the gains made in September.

This leaves the Ether ETFs with marginal yearly gains, per SoSoValue data.

Ether ETFs face worst month since November

This monthly outflow has come to wipe out gains of around $832 million that the Ether funds saw in September, leaving the funds with net inflows of about $485 million this year. This is far less than what they had earlier this month.

This marks the worst performance of these funds since November last year, and there are still eight trading days left before the end of the month. There was, however, a minor inflow of $26 million recorded on Tuesday.

The outflows were due to price falls. Ether price fell by 9.7% to $2,438 from $2,700 this month, leaving the token down by nearly 18% for the year.

The stress came incrementally. Ether funds saw a continuation of their outflow streak for eight straight days starting September 29, with total monthly outflows estimated at $641.3 million.

However, the situation got worse by the week ending October 17. The Ether ETFs saw about $320 million worth of weekly outflows, marking a third straight losing week with October totals hitting about $955 million. The new numbers saw the total pass the $1 billion mark.

Bitcoin funds fared better

There was a lighter impact on Bitcoin ETFs. The group posted around $67 million in net outflows for October and around $809 million in net inflows for the year.

There was an increase in buying as well towards the end of the month. Bitcoin funds recorded $527 million on Monday and $23 million on Tuesday, but the Monday outflow dropped off very quickly. Bitcoin was trading near $82,954, down 2.2% from the beginning of October and 5.3% year-to-date (YTD).

Some of the other crypto ETFs posted light movements. For the week ending October 17, SOL funds saw losses of around $26 million, followed by Zcash (ZEC) at $19 million and Hyperliquid (HYPE) at $18 million.

Where the money sits

However, even following the sell-off, Ether ETFs are significant. According to SoSoValue’s dashboard, the total net assets of the funds are estimated at $14.98 billion or 5.01% of Ethereum’s market cap as of October 20.

BlackRock’s ETHA leads the way with net assets of $8.05 billion vs cumulative net inflows of $12.37 billion since the ETF’s inception. In contrast, Grayscale’s ETHE shows the opposite picture – the ETF has suffered cumulative net outflows amounting to $5.49 billion amid switching to a more costly product.

It will become clear whether the October exodus will continue depending on the remaining eight sessions of the month.
