El Salvador signs AI Letter of Intent (LOI) with Nvidia

In this post:

  • El Salvador has signed a letter of intent with Nvidia to develop sovereign AI infrastructure.
  • The initiative includes establishing AI training programs for developers, researchers, and government officials to build local talent and sustain AI ambitions.
  • An application of the AI collaboration will be the creation of models to forecast weather and rainfall, which is expected to aid in emergency response and hydroelectric power management.

El Salvador made headlines when it became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. The Central American nation has now announced that it is working with the computer chip giant Nvidia to implement artificial intelligence for national development.

According to a post from the X account of the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC) of El Salvador shared on April 21, El Salvador has signed a letter of intent to collaborate with Nvidia on “sovereign AI to drive innovation and economic growth.”

El Salvador’s deal with Nvidia

The collaboration is reportedly designed to empower El Salvador with the ability to harness artificial intelligence (AI) for national development.

“Nvidia will provide El Salvador with cutting-edge AI tools, resources, and expertise,” which will enable the “development of sovereign AI capabilities tailored to the nation’s unique cultural, linguistic, environmental, and economic priorities.”

Meanwhile, El Salvador will focus on building domestic AI infrastructure, upskilling the workforce, and creating solutions to address local challenges such as improving healthcare delivery, advancing education, and boosting economic productivity.

As part of the letter of intent, El Salvador plans to establish AI training programs for developers, researchers, and government officials, ensuring the nation has the talent to actually sustain its lofty AI ambitions.

The LOI also covers the development of advanced weather and rainfall prediction models that will further enhance the allocation of emergency services resources, protect residents in mudslide-prone regions, and optimize hydroelectric power resource management with precision and efficiency.

El Salvador’s LOI with Nvidia once again positions it as a pioneer among emerging economies looking to capitalize on novel technologies.

Countries are exploring technological advantages

The announcement of El Salvador’s partnership with Nvidia comes at a crucial time when nations worldwide are recognizing AI as a critical driver of economic competitiveness and societal progress.

El Salvador is not the only country that has embraced the AI industry. Other countries exploring similar channels include Singapore with its “Smart Nation” initiative, which leverages AI to enhance public services, connectivity, and innovation.

It also has a National AI Strategy that aims to deploy AI across all sectors to boost productivity and address societal challenges.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is also heavily invested in presenting itself as a global tech hub through its “UAE Vision 2021” plan. The country has its hands in AI, blockchain, and smart government services as part of its roadmap to transitioning into a knowledge-based economy.

Then there is China, which has already become a global AI powerhouse by integrating AI into its national strategy. The country also invests heavily in AI research, education, and infrastructure, with applications in manufacturing, healthcare, and smart cities.

Teaming up with Nvidia will help El Salvador catch up with the countries already making headway in the AI industry.
