ChatGPT users can now create images with Dall-E 3 for free

- Free users of ChatGPT can now create up to two images daily with Dall-E 3.
- The feature was previously exclusive to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus.
- Now it is open to all the 190 million monthly active ChatGPT users.
OpenAI introduced a new feature that allows users of the free version of ChatGPT to create up to two images per day with Dall-E 3, the company’s most capable AI model which converts text to pictures.
The feature, previously a preserve for premium users of ChatGPT, will now be open to all the AI chatbot’s estimated 190 million monthly active users worldwide, OpenAI announced on X (formerly Twitter).
Dall-E 3 criticized for ‘subpar picture quality’
“We’re excited to introduce the ability for ChatGPT Free users to create up to two images per day with Dall·E 3,” the startup wrote.
People can use the feature to create images such as personalized cards or visuals for a presentation. OpenAI provided examples of prompts that free ChatGPT users can utilize to explore the tool – like the prompt in the picture below.

Besides generating images, the new feature will help users to refine their prompts for more accuracy, especially relating to life-like images. Even though OpenAI has liberalized access to the function, those who want to use it without restriction will still have to pay for unlimited use.
Released in September 2023, Dall-E 3 is OpenAI’s most advanced text-to-image generative AI model. It can create a range of visual styles, including whimsical illustrations and hyper-realistic images. While the increased use of Dall-E 3 has been hailed, there have been concerns over its reliability.
In February, one X user who goes by ‘Pbadolvini’ said: “Initially, Dall-E 3 produced stunning and high-quality images, but recently, the outputs have often been subpar, sometimes even reaching what I would describe as ‘catastrophic’ quality levels. This happens particularly after I’ve made many requests in a short period or when I try to generate variations of the same theme.”
It is unclear whether OpenAI solved the issues raised before the rollout to free-tier ChatGPT users.
