The Microsoft-owned gaming company announced that an Insider update had caused widespread frustration by resetting some consoles to factory settings without warning. The update was reported to have affected the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead consoles, which are part of the Xbox Insider program.
Xbox’s Insider program is a voluntary program that allows gamers to have early access to games, features, and even playtests before the developers make an official release. The update was initially voluntary but was later classified as compulsory for Xbox Series X models. The update was automatic, and gamers could install it manually.
The update resulted in outrage from gamers, who raised many complaints after their consoles were affected. Amers raised complaints about being stuck in an update loop after they had installed update 2504.250227-2200. Despite the hiccup, some gamers were able to immediately log back into their console. However, the bug resulted in gamers losing their wallpapers and custom settings and being logged out of their installed media applications. In such cases, the update did not delete installed games from the console.
Xbox’s announcement revealed that the issue had been resolved. After the issue was flagged, Xbox acknowledged its mistake and assured gamers that it would work to find a quick solution to restore things to their normal state. Xbox advised gamers affected by the crash to restart their consoles.
Xbox also provided a link to its support page, where gamers could get detailed instructions on how to resolve the issue. The instructions provided on the page directed gamers on how to remotely and manually set up or log back into their accounts.
Despite restoring normalcy by addressing the issue, Xbox failed to provide more information about the failed update. Industry players attributed the lack of a detailed explanation from Xbox as being in line with what the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead community is about.
The two communities are a small subset of gamers who opt-in or are invited to try out and test most updates and the most unstable builds. Members signing up are offered a disclaimer of what to expect before voluntarily signing in. Microsoft’s notes from the update had warned that gamers would see “odd“ text across the console after it was installed.
Gamers respond to the latest update issue
Gamers went online to discuss Microsoft’s problematic update after Xbox Insider announced that it had been resolved. Some gamers expressed their disappointment and frustrations by saying that they did not enjoy the panic that the issue had caused. Other gamers said that they were bored and annoyed after being forced to set up their Xbox consoles several times. Other gamers complained that the issue was only resolved after they had wasted time resetting their consoles several times.
“Thanks!! I so loved having to set up my console again, like it was a new system (insert eye roll here) WTF!”

However, another section of gamers had a different opinion. They said that they were thankful that Xbox had acknowledged the issues, communicated to affected parties and even provided a fix within a short period. They added that the issues should not be overblown due to the service being tied to testing games and features before they’re publicly released. Some other groups even said that the news was only published everywhere due to it being another negative thing to say about Xbox consoles.
