SBF speaks on witness tampering allegations

TL;DR

  • SBF clears air on witness tampering allegations
  • SBF’s counsel says his client is being vilified
  • Prosecutors want stricter rules enforced on the defendant

Sam Bankman Fried, through his legal counsel, has denied the allegations of witness tampering leveled against him by US prosecutors. Some days ago, prosecutors said the former FTX boss allegedly contacted the company’s legal counsel. In the statement through his legal counsel, SBF stated that he did not do anything of that nature. In addition, he mentioned that the prosecutors were doing all in their power to make him the villain of the story.

The legal counsel for the accused, Mark Cohen, also urged the court to allow SBF to meet with some of the people involved in the case. Cohen feels that this will enable him to prepare optimally for his defense against the fraud allegations. The counsel mentioned that reaching out to the present lawyer representing the company is within the restrictions set by the court.

He said that Sam Bankman Fried is just concerned about the company and wants to do all he can to assist in the bankruptcy proceedings. Prosecutors previously urged the court to enforce stricter conditions for his bail after he contacted the FTX representative. Although Bankman Fried has not pleaded guilty to the offense, he is set to have his day in court.

Prosecutors want stricter rules enforced on the defendant

In the email sent to the FTX counsel, the defendant mentioned that he wanted to rekindle his relationship with the lawyer and hoped they could help each other. After prosecutors got wind of that information, they took it as an attempt to infiltrate the counsel and sway his testimony towards helping SBF. Now, the prosecutors want him cut off from contacting other employees, and in case he wants to contact his father, there should be a legal presence. In addition, the legal counsel for the government wants the court to reduce the amount of time he uses messaging applications with encryption.

This is because he had previously used such apps to contact people and delete his copy of their conversations. This latest filing has shaken the SBF camp, with his legal representatives wary of further sanctions against the defendant. Cohen noted that the government is trying to use its version of the conversation to punish his client and paint him bad. He said that they are not looking into the full context of the situation; instead, they are trying to push their context.
