OpenAI brings its GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini models to ChatGPT

In this post:

  • OpenAI revealed yesterday that it is making the GPT-4.1 model available for everyone in ChatGPT.
  • According to OpenAI’s release notes, the GPT-4.1 model is better at coding tasks and following up on instructions.
  • OpenAI will also deprecate the GPT-4.5 preview in the API and turn it off in 3 months to allow developers to transition.

OpenAI announced that its flagship model, GPT-4.1, will be rolled out to ChatGPT. The model will be available for all paid accounts and team users under the model picker dropdown menu. OpenAI revealed that free users are excluded from the rollout, but Enterprise and Edu users will get access.

GPT-4.0 mini will be replaced by GPT-4.1 mini for all users, including free accounts. Users with paid options will also see the GPT-4.1 mini model under their drop-down picker.

According to OpenAI, GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 are optimized for coding tasks and enhanced instruction response, outperforming GPT-4.0.

OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 outperforms GPT-4.0 across the board

According to OpenAI, the GPT-4.1 model offers a larger context window, which supports up to one million context tokens and can better use the context with long comprehension. The AI  firm added that software engineers will benefit from using the model to develop web applications.

OpenAI’s release notes revealed that engineers can use the model to run daily queries, follow-up questions, coding, and other complex tasks.

The Sam Altman-led AI firm said that the GPT-4.1 model can process massive amounts of text, images, and videos in the prompt compared to GPT-4.0’s 128,000 token limit. According to OpenAI, GPT-4.1 scored 54.6% SWE-bench Verified, improving by 21.4% over GPT-4.0 and 26.6% over GPT-4.5, making it the leading model for coding tasks.

On Scale’s MultiChallenge benchmark, a measure of instructions following ability, GPT-4.1 scored 38.3%, a 10.5% increase over GPT-4.0. Additionally, on Video MME, a benchmark for multimodal long context understanding, GPT-4.1 set a very high score of 72.0% on the long no subtitles category, a 6.7% improvement over GPT-4.0.

OpenAI revealed that benchmarks provide valuable insights and that they trained the models with a focus on real-world applications. The company expressed gratitude to the developer community for optimizing the models for complex tasks.

GPT-4.1 comes without a safety report

The AI research community criticized OpenAI for releasing the GPT-4.1 model without the safety report, claiming that the standards of transparency on OpenAI’s models were lowered.

The AI firm argued that, despite offering improved performance and speed over GPT-4.0, the model doesn’t require safety reporting that more advanced models do, as it’s not the frontier model.

“ GPT-4.1 doesn’t introduce new modalities or ways of interacting with the model, and doesn’t surpass 03 in intelligence. This means that the safety considerations here, while substantial, are different from frontier models.”

Johannes Heidecke, Open AI Head of Safety

The AI tech firm released more information about GPT-4.1 in response to the safety claims. On Wednesday, the company committed to publishing promptly the results of its internal model safety evaluations as part of an effort to increase transparency.

The company revealed that it’s making efforts to stand out in an increasingly crowded field. The AI firm is reportedly close to announcing its $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, one of the most well-known AI coding tools. Windsurf competes with Cursor, another popular AI coding tool, and existing AI coding features from companies like Microsoft and Anthropic.

Andrej Karpathy, a former OpenAI founder, said Windsurf is a tool developers have flocked to in recent months to assemble code for new software quickly. The startup’s investors include Founders Fund, General Catalyst, Greenoaks, and Kleiner Perkins.

Google, on the other hand, updated its Gemini chatbot to connect more easily to GitHub projects. The GitHub integration comes after OpenAI launched a GitHub connector for ChatGPT deep research. The GitHub connector tool searches the web and other sources to compile a thorough research report on a topic.

On Tuesday, OpenAI welcomed SharePoint and Microsoft OneDrive connectors as well to ChatGPT deep research.
