Newer tokens capture value, compensating for low altcoin performance

Newer tokens capture value, compensating for low altcoin performance
  • New tokens are one of the most active asset classes in 2026, often outperforming BTC.
  • Newer tokens boost altcoin sentiment, but have not triggered an all-out altcoin market.
  • BNB Chain is a leader in new token value, as well as total token holders.

Newer tokens remained a strong asset class in 2026, while legacy altcoins still lagged behind. New launches and liquidity kept the market active, with some ecosystems capturing more of the fees and market value.

Recently launched tokens remained the main driver of recoveries in top 100 assets. This made the crypto market look like it was having another altcoin wave, though older assets were still passed in favor of new types of launches.

Token launches and trading now compete with perpetual futures markets, prediction markets, and RWA assets, but activity showed tokens are still a staple in the crypto space, inviting liquidity and speculative trading.

The shifts in the top 100 assets placed new tokens from the 2024-2026 era at the top. Those assets achieved a median return of 27.5%, while every other token from earlier market cycles posted negative returns.

Based on CryptoRank data, around 70.8% of newer tokens are in profit, while only 30% of assets listed before 2017 have positive returns.

The 2026 trend shows there is still appetite for assets outside BTC, but traders are no longer loyal to specific tokens or expecting returns from underperforming chains. As Cryptopolitan reported, both users and traders were quick to move on, leading to the closing of low-usage chains. Token traders are more aware of chain activity, looking for platforms with highly active apps.

Newer tokens boost altcoin sentiment

Based on the altcoin season index, the market remains neutral at 55 points. At this point, liquidity rarely shifts between BTC and altcoins, as traders aim to tap all growth opportunities. In the short term, specific newer tokens outperform BTC, with over 200% gains for the past quarter.

Newer tokens also often come with incentives, token burns, and fee distribution, instead of being purely speculative assets. As a result, the tokens of leading platforms, DeFi protocols and DEXs are among the outperforming assets in Q3, including PUMP, HYPE, UNI, AAVE, JUP, CAKE, and others.

BNB Chain taps the value of new launches

While Solana captured the biggest number of meme token launches and their spot DEX trading, the biggest growth in value happened on the BNB Chain ecosystem.

BNB Chain also has the highest rate of token holders, surpassing Ethereum and other chains. The chain is still a venue for retail traders, with the chance that some of the tokens will gain liquidity from a Binance DEX listing or even a limited centralized market. The incentives of Binance Alpha also boosted selected assets.

BNB Chain and its connection to liquidity on Binance captured tokens aiming for longevity, rather than short-term memes. In 2026, CryptoRank counted 732 project-linked tokens, with an average market capitalization of $23M.

Tokens launched on BNB Chain reached a total value of $6.4B for the 2026 cohort, or around 51% of the total market capitalization. The value of tokens does not always reflect activity or available liquidity, and some of the assets in the BNB Chain ecosystem have also posted deep losses.

BNB Chain is also used to trade wrapped tokens and coin versions from other ecosystems, which take up a bigger share of liquidity compared to new launches.

At the same time, the lifetime count of Pump.fun tokens is now over 23.7M new assets, though most of them have lost their value and all of their activity.

In 2026, Ethereum-compatible tokens took a downturn. At the start of the year, Base tried to become the main chain for new launches, but only maintained that pace for the first quarter, peaking at nearly 3M daily tokens. The last quarter was the slowest for Base since the end of 2024, showing the chain lagged behind the launch and liquidity trend.
