TL;DR

The blockchain is prevailing and thus is the norm now. This time it’s Nevada! Counties in the southern region of the state of Nevada are using the blockchain distributed ledger technology to store birth and marriage certificates.

About a thousand (950) couples getting marries in the Washoe County have already received their marriage certificate through the service and the Elko County is using blockchain to issue birth certificates.

Reportedly, Washoe County is using Ethereum blockchain to issue and store the digital copies of their marriage certificates with security being the major binding motivator. The second binding motivator is the swiftness of the solution since paper-based certificates take up to ten business days whereas digital copies take a little less than twenty-four hours.

Reports on Elko county blockchain programs have not revealed the blockchain technology base however the marriage certificate program is successful in implementation after being endorsed by the Social Security Administration.

There is, however, one drawback that the couples receiving the digital copies face every now and then, poor cross-agency acceptance. Due to the possibilities of fake documents some government agencies such as motor vehicle department are reluctant to accept the digital documents.

The county is keen on implementing and improving the system and is now looking at creating a backup ledger system in case the original system is compromised or destroyed.
