Gallup’s study with Telescope revealed that nearly all Americans use at least one AI-enabled product weekly. The study also disclosed that two-thirds (64%) of Americans don’t realize that they use products with artificial intelligence (features).
The firm found that many Americans have a negative view of AI’s potential, while some are optimistic about how it will contribute to society in the future. The report, based on a web study of nearly 4,000 U.S. adults, was conducted between November 26 and December 4.

The study showed that 36% of Americans said they had used some kind of AI-enabled product in the past seven days. Fifty percent of Americans revealed they had not used any products with AI features, while 14% said they were not sure.

The report also asked U.S. Americans about their usage of common AI-enabled products such as virtual assistants, navigation apps, weather forecasting apps, and websites. Ninety-nine percent of them said they used at least one product with AI features, while 83% said they had used at least four.
Fifty percent of Americans who said they had not used an AI-enabled product in the past seven days revealed they used five or six of the listed products in the past week. Eight out of 10 Americans also reported using five common AI-enabled products within the past seven days.
The report also revealed that 50% of Americans said they had used a personal virtual assistant product in the past week. Nearly three-quarters (71%) of those who said they had used AI-enabled products were more likely to report interacting with a personal virtual assistant.
The study showed that 35% of Americans who said they had not used an AI-enabled product reported that they used a personal virtual assistant in the past week. Almost half of those who were unsure whether they had used an AI-enabled product said they used a personal virtual assistant in the past seven days.

Almost half of Americans (47%) with degrees also disclosed that they used AI-enabled products, together with a third of those without degrees. 45% of those earning at least $120,000 said they used AI-enabled products. The report also revealed that 38% of those making $60,000 to less than $120,000 and 30% of those making less than $60,000 also used AI-enabled products.
The report also showed that 44% of American residents living in large cities, 38% of those living in suburbs, and 31% of those living in rural areas used AI-enabled products.
Most Americans view AI’s potential impact as negative
Gallup’s study disclosed that more people had negative than positive views of AI’s potential impact on various aspects of society. The report indicated that most U.S. citizens believe that AI will have a negative impact on the spread of false information in the next five years.
Only AI’s impact on medical diagnosis and treatment was perceived as positive for AI. The study revealed that Americans who reported using a higher number of common AI-enabled products had more positive views of the potential for AI technology in medical diagnosis and treatment.
According to the report, American residents who used more AI-enabled products had more negative perceptions of how AI would affect the spread of false information in the next five years. Nearly two-thirds of those who reported using five or six of the listed products had very positive perceptions of medical applications for AI.
The study also indicated that those aged 18 to 19 were more likely than older adults to have more negative perceptions of the impact of AI technology on job opportunities. More than three-quarters (78%) of younger adults believe AI will have a negative impact on America’s opportunities to get good jobs in the next five years. Sixty-six percent of adults aged 30 to 39 and 58% of adults aged 40 to 60 also believe that AI will have a negative impact on America’s job opportunities in the next five years.
The report also showed that 96% of Americans said that the government was partly responsible for reducing AI-related national security threats. Sixty-two percent of Americans also revealed that the government is fully responsible for reducing AI-related national security threats as opposed to business.
