  • Sony’s request of PSN account linking for Helldivers 2 PC players is aimed at strengthening the game security, but comes as a euphemism to the community.
  • The current dispute over compulsory PSN account linking reveals still unresolved problems concerning balance between security and users’ convenience in online gaming.
  • Helldivers 2 players protest by voicing their disgruntlement, Sony weighs in by advocating for the need of account linking for a secure and fair gaming experience.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that to continue playing Helldivers 2, PC players need to link their game account with their PSN account, a PlayStation Network account. Through the enforcement of such rules due to technical reasons, gamers are stirred up and many of them are unwillingly stating their outrage and dissatisfaction for Sony.

Mandatory PSN account linking imposed

As stated by Sony Interactive Ent. in their recent post on the Steam platform, all the new Helldivers 2 players on Steam have to associate their Steam accounts with PSN starting May 6th. Transitioning players will have up to June 4th, to link their accounts. Sony says that this choice is essential for the safe and pleasant game environment because it allows for timely and effective moderation and prevention of the malicious conduct such as grievance.

At the beginning of the game it was planned that PSN account linking should be included but it was temporarily waived for technical reasons during the launch period. This grace period has now ended, requiring the immediate enforcement of the necessity to link accounts as a program rule. Sony underlined that this was in line with their idea that the players should enjoy the game with no disruptions or abuse.

Feedback of Helldivers 2 community outrush

The message did not have much impact on preventing the Helldivers 2 players from overwhelming the Steam platform with a bunch of negative reviews after the posts went live. The majority of the players feel it as an unwanted disadvantage, mentioning that they find the necessity to link PSN ID with their account extremely annoying, especially since the primary purpose of this product is a PC game.

Helldivers 2 has witnessed an extraordinary turn of events since its release a few months ago. The game is among the most top-selling PC games for Sony. But the discord about the introduction of the new account connecting rule has sparked the uncertainty about its influence on the game’s further love and its playfulness with the player base. The stipulation could scare players away and along with that, current players might also leave owing to this condition.

Sony’s response

In light of words of criticism, Sony pointed out the inconvenience to players, but also underlined the concern that such measures were introduced to foster sharp but pleasant gameplay. The community manager of the company has once again underlined the company’s devotion to the development of a solid and secure neighborhood where players get disciplined on Helldivers 2. The significance is important emphasized by the support that linking of accounts provides in the fight against harmful acts and discrimination.

While the linking of the accounts for Helldivers 2 is overwhelming players, and the opinions on this issue become harsher, tensions around this topic within gaming community are growing steadily. The idea behind the Sony regulation is best described as a good combination of security and consideration for the players. This discontent however could be evidence of the complexity of blending security measures with user convenience in the online gaming environments. The actual influence on Helldivers 2 gamers’ community and relationship core values, the still unknown future is. That is when the gamers wake up to this new demand.
