Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk is reportedly preparing to launch his own AI start-up to compete with OpenAI and its popular ChatGPT, according to the Financial Times. Interestingly, Musk has previously been affiliated with the research firm behind the viral chatbot and has expressed concerns about the technology.
A new contender enters the AI arena
The success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT has fueled an intense AI arms race within the tech world. With generative AI dominating the industry in 2023, Amazon’s AI competitor Bedrock has also entered the fray. Now, another industry heavyweight is poised to join the competition.
Elon Musk is planning to introduce his own AI start-up to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as reported by The Financial Times. Amid the skyrocketing popularity of generative AI technology, the billionaire is set to make his mark in the sector.
Musk’s startup strategy: engineers, investors, and chips
The report reveals that Musk is working to “hire engineers, attract investors, and acquire chips needed to build large language models.” Furthermore, Musk is said to be in discussions with SpaceX and Tesla investors concerning the new venture. “A bunch of people are investing in it… It’s real, and they are excited about it,” said a person with knowledge of the matter.
Musk has also reportedly acquired “thousands of high-powered GPU processors from Nvidia,” which are essential for constructing the large language models at the core of generative AI technology.
However, Musk’s swift action to launch his start-up has raised eyebrows, given his involvement in various efforts to slow AI development. However, the Tesla founder’s concerns about OpenAI and its technology have been widely publicized, making his entry into the AI market a perplexing move.
