Big tech ramps up AI spending as reasoning models take over

The biggest tech firms will raise their yearly expenditures on artificial intelligence to over $500 billion by the beginning of the following decade, fueled partly by DeepSeek and OpenAI’s more recent AI methodology. 

Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., and Meta Platforms Inc., collectively known as hyperscalers, are projected to spend $371 billion on AI data centres and computing resources in 2025, a 44% increase from the previous year. By 2032, this figure is expected to soar to $525 billion.

Historically, much of the investment in AI had gone to data centres and chips to train or create significantly complex new AI models. Now, the companies want to take a different approach. Following this, tech firms are expected to move more spending to inference or the process of running those systems after they’ve been trained.

How DeepSeek and OpenAI are shaping AI spending trends

China’s DeepSeek, OpenAI, and several other companies have introduced new reasoning models, intensifying competition among firms that have yet to adopt a similar approach.

These systems mimic human problem-solving by taking additional time to process and compute responses to user queries.

The rise of DeepSeek, which claimed that it could create a competitive model at a cheaper cost compared to some of its top US competitors, raised concerns about heavy investments in AI development in the US tech sector. As a result, some leading tech firms prefer more efficient AI systems that can run on fewer chips.

However, reasoning models also present new chances to profit from software and possibly shift more development costs after the model is rolled out. This will likely encourage more investment in this strategy and increase spending on AI in general.

An analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence, Mandeep Singh, wrote, “Capital spending growth for AI training could be much slower than our prior expectations.”

However, he noted that the tremendous focus on DeepSeek will probably encourage tech companies to “increase investments” in inference, making it the market segment with the fastest growth rate in generative AI.

According to reports, more than 40% of hyperscalers’ AI budgets this year are anticipated to go toward training; however, in 2032, that percentage will fall to just 14%. In contrast, almost half of all annual AI spending may be allocated to inference-driven investments.

On the other hand, Singh wrote that Alphabet Inc.’s Google appears best positioned to make this pivot quickly, thanks to its in-house chips that handle training and inferencing. Other tech companies, like Microsoft and Meta, may not have as much flexibility because they have relied so heavily on Nvidia Corp. chips.

How reasoning models are reshaping AI with structured, logical thinking

Reasoning models are specialised language models designed to solve problems through explicit logical reasoning that have emerged as a new paradigm in AI, overcoming conventional LLMs in challenging tasks by breaking down problems, “thinking” before responding, and iteratively improving solutions.

Historically, general-purpose LLMs could generate simple answers. With the introduction of reasoning models, answers follow a more structured thought process, and the process of arriving at that answer is indicated. However, while some models clearly display their logical reasoning phase, others do not.

The reasoning phase shows how the model can break down the problem stated into smaller problems (decomposition), try different approaches (ideation), choose the best approaches (validation), reject invalid approaches (possibly backtracking), and finally choose the best answer (execution/solving).
