Apple races to develop ‘LLM Siri’ model to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT

In this post:

  • Apple is racing to develop an LLM Siri system.
  • Its goal is to directly compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
  • It may continue to provide access to third-party AI systems for specialized tasks.

Apple is racing toward the development of a conversational version of Siri referred to as LLM Siri, to catch up with ChatGPT by OpenAI.

The new LLM Siri will use more advanced AI language models, also known as LLMs. These models will allow back-and-forth conversations with users.

According to a Bloomberg report, this information is given by unnamed people who tested the model. However, they have not chosen not to be identified because Apple’s efforts are not public yet. Reportedly, this new system will also handle sophisticated requests quickly.

Apple aims to ramp up its AI efforts with Siri

The goal to revamp the 13-year-old Siri system is Apple’s step forward towards becoming a major player in the AI industry. Last month, Apple debuted the Apple Intelligence platform. However, it currently lacks several features offered by other tech companies.

The new LLM Siri will eventually become a part of Apple Intelligence. It will use a large amount of data to identify patterns and generate sophisticated answers to user’s questions.

Apple has tested the software on Macs, iPads, and iPhones as a standalone application. However, it is expected that this tech will replace Siri’s interface. This overhaul is expected to become a part of the upcoming macOS 16 and iOS 19 in 2025.

However, just like Apple Intelligence, these new features will not immediately be included in the next device. Apple plans to release the new Siri by Spring 2026. However, these features and timings may shift as Apple is still months away from an official announcement.

The new LLM Siri will interact like a human and work like ChatGPT

This new Siri will make use of Apple AI models. It will interact like a human and perform tasks similar to Google’s Gemini and ChatGPT by OpenAI. At the same time, it will also make use of App Intents, for precise control. The software will also be able to make use of other features of Apple Intelligence, such as summarizing and writing text.

Earlier when Apple first unveiled the AI platform, it mentioned it as “the start of a new era” for its Siri software. However, the company is yet to fully overhaul it. The upgrades at that time were mostly cosmetic.

As part of iOS 18, Siri is expected to receive more tweaks in the coming few months. It will be able to get customer data and give context for commands. At the same time, it will also be able to take action using the info on screen.

Currently, the iOS 18 uses the first-gen Apple LLM to check if requests require Siri or if they should b routed to a different LLM that is designed to handle complex tasks. However, the next-gem LLM model planned for iOS 19 will be totally new. It will be an end-to-end system that provides capabilities similar to ChatGPT.

Apple is adding ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence

While Apple is working on its new LLM-Siri, it will include ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence as early as next month. After that, Apple has plans to include additional options for chatbots like Gemini.

For several years, Apple has tried to give Siri conversational abilities but struggled with the right technology. The goal with its new Siri model is to bring such capabilities in-house with an emphasis on user privacy. However, it is likely that Apple will continue to offer third-party AI systems with specialized abilities.
