Vibe Coding Has Made Everyone A Programmer

Software development isn’t what it used to be. Thanks to the rapid emergence of what’s known as “vibe coding”, a new approach that allows AI models to create code based on human instructions, users can now create fully functional applications simply by describing them. You no longer need to write code to be able to work with code, and the implications of this will be truly immense.

The term vibe coding was unwittingly coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, who posted on X about his new, laid-back approach to creating and editing software, enabled by recent advances in AI. “I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy-paste stuff, and it mostly works,” he wrote. In this brave new world of software development, AI does all the heavy lifting — all humans have to do is come up with the ideas.

Vibe coding has become the catch-all way to describe the way software developers increasingly let AI take over the monotonous task of actually writing line after line of code. Instead of typing out Java- or Python-based syntax, all they have to do is tell the AI what functionality they want to create, and it will rapidly generate the required code needed to do that.

The trend has emerged in next to no time due to the rapid advances in the capabilities of generative AI models such as ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot. Just a few years ago, these tools were more often referred to as “coding assistants,” and they were much more limited. They could suggest coding completions as programmers typed away, saving them time, but they couldn’t do much more. Now though, it’s possible for them to generate an entire application on request.

Coding assistants have evolved to become application creators, and their adoption has soared. As of July 2025, GitHub Copilot had more than 20 million users globally, with a majority of those users reporting that it generates almost half of all the code they write. It’s setting the stage for an incredible transformation in coding, where knowledge of programming languages is no longer a requisite.

How easy is it?

As remarkable as it sounds, this is not science fiction. Google AI Studio’s “Build Apps With Gemini” is just one example of a tool that acts like your designer, architect, developer and co-founder all at once.

This YouTube video demonstrates how Gemini was able to develop a document signing application, similar to something like DocuSign, where users can upload, sign and manage all of their documents in one place. The app was created in less than three minutes, with a clean and professional interface and user authentication features to support secure access. The user did so with a simple natural language prompt, followed by a couple of additional prompts to refine the look and feel of the app.

Gemini has the added advantage of allowing users to specify which AI models they’d like to build the specific elements of the app, but the uninitiated need not worry about this, as it will automatically select the most appropriate model for each task if they’re unsure.

It’s not just apps but also games development that’s being transformed with the vibe coding approach. Take SlotGPT, which is a new service that’s focused on developing slot machine games based on the user’s whims and concepts. To get started, all that’s required is to enter a simple prompt that describes the style or look and feel of the game, and the model will do all of the work. Users can enter additional prompts to adjust the prizes on offer and the chances of winning, and they can even publish the completed game on SlotGPT’s platform to start playing it right away — either for free or with real money.

SlotGPT’s mission is to make game development inclusive for everyone, and it allows users to build slot games specifically for mobile, desktop, and tablet platforms, and they can do so with the most minimal of effort. Indeed, they can enter as little as a single character in their prompt and it will come up with the rest. Moreover, the ability to publish the completed game on its platform is a genuine milestone that paves the way for people to get their creations seen and noticed by the world.

Accelerating towards a smarter world

Vibe coding isn’t without its problems. As the world moves away from programming to prompting, there are genuine questions about what might be lost if developers no longer have the ability to write code by themselves. While enthusiasts see vibe coding as a natural evolution of programming, critics emphasize caution and the need for human oversight, while warning of the potential for copyright issues and bugs.

In fact, it would probably be wise for creators to learn the fundamentals of coding anyway so they can properly understand what AI is doing on their behalf and don’t just treat it as a magic bullet for every problem that crops up. Vibe coding tools will dramatically accelerate application development and empower everyone to become a creator, but organizations will need to ensure they’re still thoroughly testing and reviewing their code for quality and security issues.

As long as human oversight is maintained, there’s every reason to be optimistic about the future of vibe coding. AI is reshaping the way programmers work, and instead of writing every line by hand, they’re now steering the automated tools that do it for them. It enables a shift from repetitive grunt work to higher level thinking, where developers can unleash their full creativity to make smarter applications faster.
