The government of the United States of America is now one of the biggest Bitcoin holders in the world. According to data from crypto intelligence platform Arkham, the country now ranks high alongside other countries like Germany and the United Kingdom in its Bitcoin balance. Arkham introduced a dashboard featuring the governments with the highest digital assets on its platform.
United States ranks top among Bitcoin holders
In its announcement, Arkham clarified that Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States are a few countries with the highest Bitcoin holdings in the world. With its new dashboard, interested parties can view the real-time balance of the digital assets held by governments worldwide.
According to the data, the United States government, which could be classified as a Bitcoin whale holds more than 212,000 Bitcoins worth over $15 billion.
In addition to its Bitcoin, the United States government also holds Ethereum and stablecoins like USDT and USDC worth about $200 million. The United Kingdom government came in second according to the rankings boasting over 61,000 Bitcoins worth $4.5 billion at the time of writing. The German government, which came in third holds 49,858 BTC which amounts to close to $3.5 billion.
Transparency and accumulation strategies
El Salvador, despite its high-flying stance with Bitcoin adoption, holds a significantly lower amount of Bitcoin compared to what would have been expected. According to the data, El Salvador only boasts 5,717 Bitcoin worth about $405 million. The release of this data shows the transparency on the part of the countries in terms of their Bitcoin holdings.
In the same vein, it has been a long time since the public has heard anything about the Bitcoin holdings of major countries, especially the United States. The dashboard data revealed that the US government began to accumulate Bitcoin over the last few years. Since the beginning of 2023, the United States government has added about 5,000 Bitcoin to its previous cache. However, a bigger part of its holdings are from assets seized from criminal entities. Some of it includes Bitcoin related to the dark web Silk Road and hackers of the Bitfinex exchange.
