UK authorities auctions off recovered EtherDelta crypto worth 294k

Over two hundred and ninety-four thousand dollars ($294,000) worth of EtherDelta crypto that was confiscated from a teenage hacker has been auctioned off by the British police.

British police and the United Kingdom authorities recently carried out a one of its kind auction when the unit auctioned off

Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) collaborated with the Wilsons Auctions for selling the cryptocurrencies, including BTC, XRP, and Ethereum.

Martin Peters, Detective Chief Inspector stated that in this digital era, the process and storage of asset recovery have evolved. So, the process must be modernized, and that also requires working along with various commercial partners. He further stated that an asset management and realization contractor for vetting the bidders was also hired by the department in order to ensure that these assets do not make their way back.

What is EtherDelta crypto?

In 2018 the funds of a nineteen-year-old hacker Elliott Gunton were seized by the police, after a routine check of the teenager’s computer that was related to his 2015’s sentence for hacking into Talk Talk, a telecommunications giant.

While inspecting his computer, the police discovered that Gunton had the stolen personal information of the EtherDelta customers, and he had advertised it for an online sale for three thousand dollars, paid in cryptocurrency. Gunton’s illegal holdings were valued at the time to be about three hundred and thirty-seven thousand dollars ($337,000).

This auction took place after Gunton was pleaded guilty and has been sentenced by the Norwich Crown Court for twenty months in prison along with that he has been ordered to repay about five hundred and nine thousand dollars ($509,000).

According to the indictment, Gunton had worked with Anthony Nashatk who is a United States’ national. They both breached the exchange and withdrew cryptocurrency from several EtherDelta accounts.
