The game developer failed to expound on the exact nature of the projects, fueling speculation it may be working on a possible remake or re-release. Square Enix announces surprises for Chrono Trigger’s 30th anniversary
Square Enix, the Final Fantasy developer, revealed plans for multiple projects as part of celebrations to commemorate Chrono Trigger’s 30th anniversary. Square Enix’s announcement stated that the video game company will launch “various projects that go beyond the world of the game over the next year.”
As per the announcement, it made the decision to reward the fans who had played and supported the RPG over the course of its existence.
The Japanese company praised the franchise and described it as a “timeless masterpiece that transcends generations in its celebratory announcement. Square Enix added that the franchise was a dream project by three renowned creators; Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), Yuuji Horii (Dragon Quest) and Hinorubu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy). The announcement emphasized the game’s relevance in the modern day by stating that it is still being talked about today despite being released in 1995.
Despite the high praise, the announcement did not expound on the nature of the projects in development. Square Enix’s release did not specify the exact number, release dates, or other important details about the projects, leaving gamers to speculate. Speculation mainly centered around the game finally getting a modern re-release or a remake, just like Square Enix’s recent success with remasters, such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Live A Live. Chrono Trigger is currently unavailable for major consoles like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
Square Enix’s announcement also fueled speculation that the projects won’t be game-related. Industry players speculated that a Chrono Trigger anime adaptation could be in the works, potentially inspired by the cutscenes added to the PlayStation 1 version of the game. The announcement ended with the video game company assuring gamers that it would provide them with timely updates. The announcement directed that information about the projects would be issued through Square Enix’s official X and @ChronoTriggerPR accounts.
Gamers react to Square Enix announcement
Gamers were quick to comment online after Square Enix revealed its plans for Chrono Trigger projects in 2025. Some gamers said that the Chrono Trigger games were some of the best games they had ever played and that they were excited to see the studio continue Chrono Trigger’s legacy by releasing new projects, be it a remake, an anime, a sequel, or a spin-off.
Other gamers said that they were keeping an eye out for the revealed projects and that they had still been surprised how the classic Chrono Trigger games had not already gotten the HD-2D treatment they deserved. Some gamers said they would be happy if the developer had ported the game to modern platforms such as the PlayStation and Switch consoles.
However, some gamers were against the decision revealed by Square Enix. Some gamers said that they were willing to be called old or jaded if the video game company left the highly acclaimed Chrono Trigger game franchise alone. Some gamers said that the projects announced would most likely be below expectation and be largely ploys to sell merchandise.
Other gamers said that they would not endorse Square Enix’s decision since the projects would not be game related. The gamers referenced the failure of the Chrono Cross 2022 launch as a possible outcome, given the studio’s track record in doing similar projects.
