MultiVersus game director Tony Huynh posted a statement on X to apologize to fans for the game’s shutdown and to address the threats against the team.
Last Friday, MultiVersus announced that it will discontinue online support and downloads after Season 5 wraps up on 30th May, 2025. The game will be delisted from Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation Store, and Microsoft Store.
Many fans were disappointed following this announcement, especially those who could not get a refund on the Founder’s Pack.

In his statement, Huynh said players have the right to criticism, but when it includes threats to harm, “it’s crossing the line.” He urged the players to “take a step back” and empathize with the team going through an “extremely sad” situation.
Huynh added, “Nobody wanted this outcome, and it wasn’t from lack of caring or effort” on the developers’ part.
MultiVersus director also apologized to fans
Huynh apologized to the players for not including their favorite characters in the game. He explained that character selection depends on various considerations like “working with IP holders” besides “listening to what the community wants.”
He shared how the developer team has been collaborative and has always encouraged the players’ ideas, but they are also “limited by time and resources.”
The MultiVersus director also encouraged players to enjoy Season 5 until it lasts and hopes that players will continue to support other platform fighter games.
In the end, he said, ” I don’t know what the future holds for any of all of us, but I just wanted to say thank you.”
Players were not satisfied with Hyunh’s apology
The gaming community didn’t take Huynh’s statement well. One user with the handle @NotGettingOver thinks no one wanted Aquaman or Lola in MultiVersus other than the director himself. He also said that the team did not listen to any advice.
Another user, @Mykolageto said he wanted to feel sorry, but Huynh and his team didn’t know how to “create a fighting game.” He said the cause of the game’s shutdown was “broken promises” since they didn’t care to include Ben 10 despite nonstop high demand. Moreover, they should have kept the game 2v2, but the team “made terrible decisions and didn’t listen.”
Also, Huynh did not discuss refunds in his statement. Regarding this, one user replied, “Nothing about the founder’s pass. I’m not surprised there.” Another user said that the game was obviously a “sad ridiculous money-grab and run.”
Overall, the main concerns of players were ignored, and therefore, the director’s apology failed to satisfy them.
