Microsoft unveils free unlimited access for Copilot Voice and Think Deeper

In this post:

  • Microsoft has lifted all usage restrictions for Think Deeper and Copilot Voice promising users unlimited access to these AI features.
  • Microsoft confirmed that the features are powered by the same large language model that backs ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode and Deep Research.
  • Users can have extended conversations with Copilot and capitalize on Think Deeper’s advanced reasoning models for complex tasks.

Tech giant Microsoft has announced that it will lift all usage restrictions for AI features like Think Deeper and Copilot Voice. The company will now offer the features to interested users for free without any limited access. Previously, Think Deeper (powered by o1) and Voice in Copilot had limitations imposed on non-paying users.

Microsoft recently brought OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model for the free version of Copilot. The model usually costs $200 per month for unlimited usage with ChatGPT. The o1 model launched in December 2023 and was aimed at solving tough questions relating to science, coding, and mathematics. The technology advancement has made the company announce that it is now removing usage limits on Copilot Voice and Think Deeper.

The CEO of Microsoft AI, Mustafa Suleyman, wrote on X on January 30th that Think Deeper was free for all Copilot users and allows everyone access to OpenAI’s world-class o1 reasoning model in Copilot anywhere and at no cost.

Microsoft offers free Copilot unlimited access to non-paying users

Microsoft confirmed that the features are powered by the same large language model that backs ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode and Deep Research. Previously, Think Deeper (powered by o1) and Voice in Copilot had limitations imposed on non-paying users. However, Microsoft is removing these limitations to allow Copilot users to have extended conversations with the company’s AI assistant.

The Copilot team announced that it was working to expand unlimited access to advanced features to as many people as possible and in the shortest time possible. According to a blog post published by the Copilot team, the plan starts with the two AI features before incorporating other expansions. The team, however, cautioned users of possible unplanned delays due to high demand from increased traffic or when misuse, violations, and security issues emerge.

“We are working hard to scale unlimited access to advanced features to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, starting today with Voice and Think Deeper. It’s worth noting you may experience delays or interruptions during periods of high demand or if we detect security concerns, misuse, or other violations of the Copilot Terms.”

Microsoft unveiled Copilot Voice and Think Deeper two years ago inside its Bing search engine. Microsoft still sells its $20/month Copilot Pro subscription and says users will keep their preferred access to the latest models during peak usage and early access to experimental AI features.

Microsoft promises additional use of Copilot in select Microsoft 365 apps

The tech giant promised additional use of Copilot in select Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Microsoft’s move to bring Copilot Pro features to users for free might be inspired by the emergence of China’s DeepSeek AI chatbot, which offers similar features and functionalities.

ChatGPT Plus users have limited access to o1 but can eliminate this restriction by increasing their subscription to ChatGPT Pro, which costs $200 a month. However, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman revealed that all users of Copilot will be able to access OpenAI’s “world-class o1 reasoning model.” Although Copilot does have a paid Pro version, free users will also enjoy the new feature.

The news comes after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella gave his stance on the value AI has brought since its inception. In a contrasting turn of events, the tech giant executive said that AI is generating no value at all. The comments came even though the company has invested billions of dollars in ChatGPT developer OpenAI.

During an appearance on podcaster Dwarkesh Patel’s show this week, Nadella emphasized that if AI’s growth was compared to the Industrial Revolution, productivity would go up, and the economy would begin to grow faster. He explained that the economy isn’t showing much sign of acceleration. He also said that OpenAI’s AI technology is considered the epitome of AI agents but still moves at a snail’s pace and requires constant supervision.
