Epic discusses Disney Fortnite experiences as part of their partnership

Epic Games EVP, Sax Persson, revealed that a Disney world will become part of the Fortnite universe or a separate Disney platform will be connected to Fortnite. 

At the beginning of 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic games with an announcement of their collaboration in a trailer.

A recent interview with Verge revealed that players will see famous Disney characters like Maleficent, Cruella, and Captain Hook in Fortnite in the coming future.

However, the skins from the upcoming Disney shop in Fortnite won’t be usable in all the game modes. Persson said that companies should be allowed to control how their IPs are used.

Users can create Disney-themed content in Fortnite

Persson stated that the collaboration promises to offer fans a multifaceted experience. This includes the ability to play and create Disney-themed content within Fortnite.

Additionally, the partnership aims to bring Disney shows and movies directly into the Fortnite game engine. This will allow players to watch content without leaving the game.

Epic Games and its earlier age restrictions

One of the most interesting aspects of the collaboration is how it will handle age ratings and IP control.

Epic Games has previously implemented age restrictions on certain Fortnite experiences. This has limited the use of particular cosmetics in some game modes.

However, the Disney partnership will introduce a reverse approach. Persson explained that certain Disney skins might be restricted from use in more mature game modes. This emphasizes the importance of maintaining appropriate contexts for different IPs.

This level of IP control reflects the careful consideration both companies are giving to maintaining the integrity of Disney’s characters and franchises within the Fortnite universe.

However, the details about the full scope of the Disney x Fortnite collaboration remain limited. But the gaming community is eagerly anticipating more information. A recent D23 livestream also hinted at an upcoming crossover event featuring Disney villains.
