ChatGPT’s released improved image generation, now available for free

In this post:

  • ChatGPT’s latest image generator, GPT-4o, is now available for everyone for free.
  • Sam Altman said the free tier would get three image generations daily.
  • Deep Research used to be available only to Plus and Enterprise customers, but it will soon also be available to free users.

ChatGPT’s latest image generator is now available for everyone. This is not an ordinary feature. It has gone viral for its ability to generate uncanny recreations of Studio Ghibli art. In fact, OpenAI had to delay the rollout beyond its paid tiers at first because of high demand.

CEO Sam Altman announced on X, “Chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users!”

However, about the usage limits, ChatGPT itself doesn’t elaborate. However, Sam Altman said last week that the free tier would get three image generations a day.

The updated picture generation came out on March 25 and was always meant to be available to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Free subscribers. It was based on the company’s GPT-4o model.

The great demand caused the free rollout to be pushed back. Altman joked that “our GPUs are melting.”  The demand was so high that it got a million new users in just one hour at one point. The CEO had to plead with people to stop being too “chill.”

This comes a day after the company completed a new funding round that raised another $40 billion. In fact, it has rewritten history as the largest funding round for a private tech company. Now, the company is valued at $300 billion.

GPT-40 in comparison to its competitors

This recent update to GPT-4o, which came out on Tuesday, has a lot of useful improvements, such as better text rendering and the ability to follow more complicated and detailed prompts. A post on OpenAI’s website says that it has also been trained for a long time on a “vast variety of image styles.”

Users are amazed by its ability to make still images and videos that look like their favorite animated shows, from “South Park” to classic claymation.

The models were trained on the distribution of both text and images online. This way, they learned not only how images relate to words but also how they relate to each other. When aggressive post-training is added, the model has great visual fluency and can make useful, consistent pictures that are aware of their context.

ChatGPT’s creations are unique compared to those of its competitors. They lean more on photorealistic finesse. On the other hand, Gemini, Grok, or trial-based platforms produce a slightly more varied take on Ghibli’s charm, requiring some experimentation to nail the vibe.

Free platforms like Craiyon, DeepAI, and Playground AI require more work. This is because they offer image generation with varying levels of customization. You need to upload a photo or a prompt so they can get to work. All these other tools mimic Ghibli’s whimsical aesthetic.

Deep research free in the future

Deep Research used to be available only to Plus and Enterprise customers, but soon, it will also be available to free users. A member of the technical staff at OpenAI, Isa Fulford, revealed this news in a recent webcast.

Isa Fulford said, “If you haven’t tried deep research, it’s available now for Pro, Pro, Teams, Enterprise and EDU users, and we’ll launch to free very soon.”

Deep Research is intended to manage intricate duties on behalf of users. Users can initiate deep research by merely supplying a prompt that will execute a sequence of actions that includes information retrieval, comprehension, analysis, and cross-verification against a wide range of online sources.

The inclusion of Deep Research in ChatGPT’s free tier represents a major milestone in OpenAI’s plan to democratize access to advanced AI tools. The removal of the subscription barrier by OpenAI allows a broader audience to capitalize on the potential of AI-driven research.
