Activision confirmed that Kuwait’s government has banned the selling of the newly released Black Ops 6 in the country.
The reason for banning the game is Sadam Hussein’s portrayal set in 1990’s Gulf War. In these events, Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. Although the game just took the inspiration fictionalized it for the most part. However, the pre-promotions included the re-enactments of archival footage of actual news clips.
Furthermore, the marketing posts also included actual political leaders from that time, along with Saddam Hussein, such as George Bush, Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, and Margaret Thatcher.
Activision recently confirmed the ban but Kuwait’s government made no comment
Kuwait’s ban on the game was revealed last week, but it came into focus when Activision announced it in a recent report. However, the government has not acknowledged it.
Activision has included in its statement that “All pre-orders in Kuwait will be canceled and refunded to the original point of purchase”.
The game-developing company also expressed their hope that authorities in Kuwait will reconsider the decision, as they don’t want the players in Kuwait to miss out on the experience.
Players may figure out other ways to access the game
Understandably, the reason the government chose to ban this game is the trauma that follows with it.
However, true fans and enthusiastic players will also find ways to experience the game. It can be done by using a VPN or getting their hands on it through the black market.
Call of Duty has faced government offenses before
It is risky to include real historical events serving as the plot for the game. Call of Duty has faced these risks even before, and it is not the first time they had to tackle such an issue which can offend one or another government.
Previously they had to remove the popular Russian level from the Modern Warfare 2’s Russian edition. Furthermore, they also edited out the clip of Tiananmen Square from the Black Ops – Cold War trailer because there were complaints from China.
Although it is different for them this time. Since COD Black Ops 6 is inspired by Gulf War-based events completely, they have no option but to make amends to it in order to get it released in Kuwait.
All they can do is hope.
