Baidu integrates DeepSeek AI amid rising competition with Tencent

In this post:

  • Baidu will adopt DeepSeek AI models into its search engine following Tencent’s similar move.
  • The company also intends to offer access to DeepSeek to enhance AI-based application development.
  • On Monday, Baidu’s stock plunged by 8% following the recent announcement.

Baidu is integrating DeepSeek AI models into its search engine following rival Tencent’s similar strategy.

Baidu’s integration with DeepSeek AI systems comes after Tencent tested this AI technology on Weixin, which operates as WeChat throughout mainland China.

Baidu announced on Sunday that it would integrate DeepSeek entirely with its AI system, Ernie, to improve its search engine results using more extensive AI capabilities.

According to an SCMP report, the company intends to offer developers access to DeepSeek through its platform, which will expand the options for AI-based applications.

This recent development demonstrates DeepSeek’s increasing power within the Chinese AI industrial sector. The Hangzhou-based start-up gained attention rapidly following the development of its two high-end AI models, V3 and R1.

These models were developed at much lower costs than competing AI systems. DeepSeek’s AI models have created significant interest throughout China and worldwide because they force competitors to reassess their AI approaches.

Tencent introduced DeepSeek-R1 search capabilities to mainland Chinese users through the Weixin search platform. The 1.3 billion Weixin users provide DeepSeek with an opportunity to increase its visibility in the AI market sector.

Baidu stock declines by 8% following DeepSeek integration announcement

Baidu’s announcement triggered a major stock decline, causing its Hong Kong trading value to decrease by approximately 8% during Monday afternoon sessions. The company experienced its largest one-day stock market decrease since November.

Baidu’s upcoming earnings announcement on February 18 at 7:30 am EST will allow investors to understand its financial condition during the AI competition.

The quick expansion of DeepSeek has generated interest among both Chinese businesses and local government entities.

The public service systems in Guangzhou and Shenzhen adopted DeepSeek’s R1 model during the weekend.

The Guangzhou government intends to deploy its R1 model for policy interpretation and management of public service hotlines. Meanwhile, the Shenzhen Longgang district has become the first Chinese local government to implement this AI system on a full scale.

Baidu announced that the upcoming version of its Ernie AI model will launch on June 30th as an open-source model. Moreover, Ernie Bot will be free for use beginning April 1st, 2025.

The intensifying Chinese AI competition drives Baidu to adopt a collaborative approach instead of maintaining exclusive practices. DeepSeek’s open-source methodology will probably inspire additional businesses to adopt similar practices in order to remain competitive in the changing AI field.
