Out of seven nominations, Astro Bot has won four, including the most prestigious award of the evening, The Game of the Year award.
Other titles nominated for the Game of the Year were Black Myth: Wukong, Balatro, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and a controversial entry, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Swen Vincke, director of Baldur’s Gate 3, presented this year’s award. He was the winner of last year’s Game of the Year title. He described it as changing his life. In a lighthearted comment, he said, “Should you be told to wrap it up, you can always come back and chat for three minutes.”
Team Asobi’s head, Nicolas Doucet, thanked the team and PlayStation for their support with Astro and acknowledged PlayStation’s 30 years of legacy. He also recalled playing Super Mario Bros. and how Astro Bots’ foundations were based on the game.
Metaphor: ReFantazio became the second notable winner
Astro Bot was nominated in seven categories in The Game Awards 2024, making it the most prominent game.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was the second title, receiving an equal number of nominations. However, it took away only one award in the Best Score and Music category. Meanwhile, Metaphor: ReFantazio became the second notable winner. It won Best Narrative, Best RPG, and Best Art Direction.
It was unusual for Balatro to be nominated for The Game Awards 2024 platform. So much so the developer found it “completely surreal.” Still, it took the spotlight in the Indie game category, winning the Best Indie and Best Debut Indie categories.
Looking at the year ahead with GTA 6 as the obvious Most Anticipated game, The Game Awards 2024 also made major announcements for new trailers and spinoffs.
