Arrowhead Game Studios revealed that Steamforged Games was developing a Helldivers 2-inspired board game. The board game will draw from the shooter and incorporate its tactical and action elements. It is expected to be released on April 8, 2025.
The Helldivers game franchise is among the highly rated franchises despite only having two games launched since its gaming debut in 2015. With the success of its two games and, most recently, the commercial success of Helldivers 2 in 2024, the franchise has expanded its portfolio to enter the board game market.
Arrowhead announces a Helldivers board game
Arrowhead Games announced a new Helldivers 2 board by stating that “Super Earth’s war against tyranny is expanding beyond digital battlefields.” The new board game is set to launch on April 8, 2025, through Gamefound. The announcement revealed that the game will allow 1-4 players to participate in high-stakes battles that mirror the similarly-named squad shooter game. The board game will be developed by Gameforged Games, the creator behind other popular tabletop adaptations such as “Dark Souls: The Board Game” and “Horizon: Zero Dawn: The Board Game.”
According to the official press release, the game will feature stimulating objectives and evolving threats, including the risk of friendly fire. Gameforged stated that the game would replicate the gameplay mechanics of the popular Helldivers 2 game to give gamers exciting and unpredictable combat scenarios. Gameforged added that the board game would encourage gamers to work together and use informed strategies to complete missions and survive against the odds as they serve the interests of Super Earth. Gameforged urged gamers to expect “heroic last stands, spectacular mishaps, and the kind of cinematic action that turns every gaming session into a glorious war story!”
Gameforged also provided a star-studded list of the development team behind the new Helldivers tabletop game. The team includes decorated industry veterans such as its lead designers Derek Funkhouser (The Walking Dead: Something to Fear), Jamie Perkins (Monster Hunter World: The Board Game, Monster Hunter World Iceborne: The Board Game, Devil May Cry: The Bloody Palace), Nicholas Yu (Dungeons & Dragons Onslaught, Adventure Tactics: Domianne’s Tower), and Derek Funkhouser (The Walking Dead: Something to Fear, Tidal Blades: Rise of the Unfolders).
Gamers can support the game early via a crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound. Gamefound is a crowdfunding and pledge management platform created solely to support the development of board games. The platform enables gamers to support projects while simultaneously enabling them to engage with project developers throughout the design process. Developers have, in turn, rewarded their fanbase by giving exclusive content, early access, or special edition components as rewards for their support.
Gamers react to the Helldivers 2 board game announcement
Gamers went online to discuss the newly announced Helldivers 2 tabletop game. Some gamers said they were excited to try out the board game after having played Helldivers 2 on their consoles and PCs. Other gamers added that it was a great addition to the gaming scene since the game could be played offline, unlike most modern games released over the last few years. Some gamers went as far as asking for instructions on how they could contribute to support the game.
However, some gamers shared a different opinion. The gamers said they were not looking forward to the game since they were skeptical about Gameforged Games’ ability to deliver an affordable, engaging, high-quality game. Other gamers suggested that Arrowhead games should have focused on improving Helldivers 2 and porting it to the Xbox console instead of creating a board game.
