Argentina imposes strict regulations for crypto service providers

- Argentina has passed new crypto regulations with increased guidelines for virtual asset service providers.
- Non compliance of the regulation will allow CNV to ban the company’s operation in Argentina.
- The new rule will be in effect on December 31st, 2025.
The National Securities Commission of Argentina has finalized regulations for crypto service providers. The regulation includes general guidelines for crypto exchanges and other institutions handling digital currencies.
National Securities Commission (CNV) published the regulations on March 13th, 2025 under General Resolution No. 1058. An announcement by CNV mentions that regulations obligate “registration, cybersecurity, asset custody, money laundering prevention, and risk disclosure” on virtual asset service providers.
This regulation guarantees to provide “transparency, stability, and user protection in the crypto ecosystem.”
CNV shared that the regulation was passed after the consultation with the public and offers a balanced approach “to avoid overregulation or imposing unnecessary costs on the industry, and promoting innovation.”
Noncompliance will lead to a ban
In Argentina, VASPs have been required to register with the registry of virtual asset service providers, aka PSAV, since 2024. The new rules state that these registrations will be canceled if they overlook the guidelines. Non-registered companies will be completely blocked from operating under judicial laws.
According to the announcement, the regulation will be in effect by the end of 2025.
Companies that are individually registered with PSAV are required to structure themselves according to the new rules before July 1. Argentinian-based companies must do it before August 1st, and foreign companies must do it before September 1st.
Roberto E. Silva, the president of CNV, said, “Those who do not comply with the established requirements and deadlines will not be able to operate in Argentina”.
The guidelines mandate that companies separate their own and client funds. It also requires them to report monthly to CNV. Moreover annual audits are also made compulsory to prove their compliance.
Crypto adoption continues in Argentina after $LIBRA controversy
According to a law firm, Argentina increased its regulatory push for crypto a year ago. This happened after CNV enforced the registration rules and held crypto providers accountable to securities laws.
Crypto adoption increased in Argentina as the peso rapidly dropped. Locals preferred stablecoins like Tether’s USDT, requiring a regulatory pivot in the country.
A report by Chainalysis in October shares that Argentina recorded crypto inflows almost worth $91 billion during the period of July 2023 to June 2024, surpassing Brazil.
Crypto adoption in Argentina continues in 2025 despite the LIBRA scandal surrounding Javier Milei. The president publicly promoted a meme coin, $LIBRA, to boost Argentina’s economy. Soon after his endorsement, the meme coin plunged in value and became the largest rug pull in history.
