Question 1

Why did Microsoft pull out of the Loughton data center?

Accepted Answer

Neither company gave a formal reason, but UK Power Networks told Nscale it could not supply the 90-megawatt connection until the early-to-mid 2030s, which made the site unworkable for an anchor tenant.

Question 2

How does the exit affect Nscale's IPO?

Accepted Answer

Nscale is seeking a US listing at a valuation of around $35 billion, and Microsoft and Anthropic together represent roughly 85% of its contracted backlog, so losing Microsoft from a flagship site raises investor doubts.

Question 3

How does this connect to Stargate UK?

Accepted Answer

Stargate UK, the OpenAI, Nvidia and Nscale project announced in the same week as Microsoft's $30 billion pledge, was paused in April 2026, and the Guardian reported OpenAI never appears to have visited its key Cobalt Park site.
