Makers of action game Moonray have announced a PlayStation 5 launch of the battle arena game, expanding its IP into the console market. The combat game is currently available as free-to-play on PC, but Moonray has recently been approved by Sony to develop a console version. Moonray announced earlier this month they are launching an auto-battler for mobile in Q1 of 2025.
Moonray initially began testing its PC game with select players in March 2022 and has since expanded into a competitive multiplayer combat arena game and an ecosystem. The alpha version of the original PC game launched on the Epic Games Store in July of this year, offering campaigns with rewards for players.
No release date has been announced yet for the launch on consoles, though the team said the dates for early access and official launch on PlayStation will be revealed in upcoming announcements in the next few months.
Moonray is an action-packed multiplayer arena game that includes a variety of game modes such as 4v4, 8-man deathmatch, team objective, and duel mode (1v1). Players seek to defeat opponents in melee combat and climb the leaderboards to unlock new character skins and earn rewards.
“I’m so excited we will introduce Moonray to a whole new audience of gamers!” says Hans Andersson, CBO and co-founder of Moonray Studios. “As a huge fan of arena combat games, I truly hope that Moonray can inspire players to try more games in the genre and that it encourages game devs to make more of them, too” he said.
The company has already ventured into artforms outside of gaming, with the release last year of “Mother’s Skin,” a graphic novel that develops the lore of the Moonray universe, and a second graphic novel called “Echoes of Ascension,” which was released earlier this year. The series is written by Eisner Award winning comic book artist Brandon Graham and is available in 4,000 comic book stores in North America and the UK, including Midtown Comics and Barnes & Noble.
“Our ultimate goal is to expand the Moonray IP and bring it to life through a variety of different mediums” continued Andersson in a statement as the company recently started collaborating with renowned animation studio ReelFX. Currently, Moonray’s combat arena title is only available to play on PC. Still, the team intends to expand the Moonray IP through its upcoming launch on PlayStation, as well as with mobile titles and initiatives such as the animated series and more.
The news comes shortly after Gunzilla Games’ creation Off The Grid launched on PlayStation 5 earlier this month. Although it’s unclear how games like Off The Grid and Moonray will handle digital assets and blockchain-based elements on consoles like PlayStation, it is an important step in the right direction and especially for user acquisition.
